MULTI-METER

also known as MULTITESTER

or VOM (Volt-Ohm-milli-
ammeter)
WHAT IS A MULTI-
METER? It is a measuring
instrument that
can measure
multiple electrical
properties- such
as voltage,
resistance, and
current
MULTI-METER CAN BE USED AS:
VOLTMETER OHMMETER MILLIAMMETER

• Used to measure • An instrument for • An instrument

voltages of either measuring used to measure
direct or resistance in ohms, smaller currents,
alternating electric Ω in milliampere
current which is (mA)
expressed in Volt,
(V)

Ohmmeter It is non-linear which means the value of one
line or calibration may not be true to other
Scale lines
Pointer
• It is the needle-shape rod
that moves over the scale
of the meter. The value the
pointer hover indicates the
value being measured by
the multi-meter.
Zero Position Adjuster
 Also known as infinity
knob
 A part that allows us to
adjust the pointer to the
zero position of the scale.
Range Selector
Knob
• This part allows us to adjust
the settings of the multi-
meter. Using this we can
change what the multimeter
is measuring (voltage, current
or resistance), as well as the
range of the measurement.
• This can be auto-ranging or
manual-ranging
Zero Ohm Adjustment
Knob
• This is used to calibrate
the multi-meter when
you want to measure
the resistance of a
component or circuit.
Test Probes

• These are used to connect the

multimeter to a device under
test. Red test probes connect
to the positive terminal, and
black test probes connect to
the negative terminal
Consider the table below in interpreting
the Ohmmeter Scale
F E D C
B
A

Each group determines the value of each line

assigned to them.
A (0-2) = 0.2 E (50-100)=5 The pointer deflects 2 lines
B (2-10)= 0.5 F (100-200)=20 after 2
C (10-20)= 1
D (20-50) =2
How to measure
resistance?

Identify the Connect the test

Calibrate the multi- appropriate range leads on the
meter multiplier to be circuit/device to be
used tested

*Note: circuit or device

under test must not be
connected to any supply
voltage

Each group determines the value of each line

assigned to them. *The pointer deflected at group D,
A (0-2) = 0.2 E (50-100)=5 each line between 20-50 is (2x10) 20.
B (2-10)= 0.5 F (100-200)=20 The pointer is at one line after
C (10-20)= 1 (30x10) 300 the resistance reading is
D (20-50) =2 320 ohms at Range x10,
Question #1:
What parts of the multimeter need to be shorted or
connected to each other when being calibrated?
Question #2:
What are the 3 basic electrical properties that a
multi-meter can measure?
Question #3:
Give at least one range to use when measuring
resistance.
