KS3 Revision 6th July 2020

The document provides instructions for a science revision session over 3 hours, suggesting individual tasks focusing on topics covered over the past 3 months, including defining key words, describing scientific kingdoms and processes like photosynthesis. Students are encouraged to use their own revision notes or online resources like BBC Bitesize to complete the tasks. The tasks involve revising topics like plants and their reproduction through defining words and describing scientific kingdoms, as well as practicing word equations for photosynthesis and respiration. Students are given suggestions for online resources to support their revision work. Science Revision 3 hours

In the final week of term you will be set an assessment using google
forms. It will be multiple choice and you will receive an instant score.

The next few slides will give you an opportunity to revise the topics
we have covered over the past 3 months.

The following are only suggestions. If you feel you revise best using a
revision clock then use that, if you feel revision cards work best for
then use revision cards!

Use your own revision notes or BBC Bitesize to help you complete each
of the tasks.

Please email c.smith-hart@millfield.lancs.sch.uk if you have any

questions.
Plants and their reproduction
revision
Individual tasks
1. Define the following words : photosynthesis, classification,
biodiversity, germination and interdependence. (15 minutes)

2. All organisms are grouped into 5 kingdoms, name the 5 kingdoms

and describe each kingdoms characteristics.
(10 minutes)

3. Write the word equation for photosynthesis then name the 2

reactants and the 2 products from the equation. (5 minutes)
Answers
1) Photosynthesis-A process that plants use to make their own food. It needs
light to work.
Classification-To sort things into groups.
Biodiversity- The range of different species of organisms in an area.
Germination-When a seed starts to grow.
Interdependence-Organisms that depend on one another are said to be
interdependent.

2) 5 Kingdoms :
Animals-no cell wall, multicellular, feed on other organisms.
Fungi-cell wall contains chitin, mostly multicellular, live on dead organisms.
Plants-cell wall made of cellulose, multicellular, make their own food.
Protoctists-mostly unicellular.
Prokaryotes-cells have no nucleus, unicellular.

3)

The two reactants are : carbon dioxide and water

The two products are glucose and oxygen

Breathing and respiration
revision
Individual tasks
1. Write the word equation for aerobic respiration, then name the
2 reactants and the 2 products from the equation. (5 minutes)

2. Describe the difference between aerobic and anaerobic

respiration. Use the word equation for both aerobic and
anaerobic to help in your answer (15 minutes).

3. The alveoli are adapted to allow gas exchange in the lungs

happen easily and efficiently. Name 3 features of the alveoli
that allow gaseous exchange to take place (10 minutes).
Answers
1)

2) Glucose and oxygen react together in cells to produce carbon dioxide and water
and releases energy. The reaction is called aerobic respiration because oxygen from
the air is needed for it to work. The word equation for aerobic respiration is glucose
+ oxygen → carbon dioxide + water

Whereas anaerobic respiration produces much less energy than aerobic respiration.
The waste product, lactic acid, builds up in the muscles causing pain and tiredness .
This leads to cramp. Lactic acid is only broken down when you start aerobic
respiration again. The word equation for anaerobic respiration in humans is
glucose → lactic acid

3)
•They give the lungs a really big surface area
•They have moist, thin walls (just one cell thick)
•They have a lot of tiny blood vessels called capillaries

Acids and Alkalis

Individual tasks
1. The pH scale is a way of gauging the acidity or
alkalinity of a solution. State 10 substance and
weather they are acid/alkali or neutral and give their
pH number. Here's one to start you off stomach
acid- acid- pH 2.
(10 minutes)

2. Draw 3 hazard symbols and give their meaning.

(10 minutes)

3. Describe neutralisation? Give an example that is used

in real life to neutralise something and why.
(10 minutes)
Answers
1. 2.Any three of the following:

3. A chemical reaction happens if you mix together an acid and a base. The reaction is
called neutralisation. A neutral solution is made if you add just the right amount of acid and base
together.
Here are some ways neutralisation is used:
•Farmers use lime (calcium oxide) to neutralise acid soils.
•Your stomach contains hydrochloric acid, and too much of this causes indigestion. Antacid tablets
contain bases such as magnesium hydroxide and magnesium carbonate to neutralise the extra acid.
•Bee stings are acidic. They can be neutralised using baking powder, which contains sodium
hydrogen carbonate.

Combustion
revision
Individual tasks
1. Define combustion and oxidation. (5 minutes)

2. Research combustion (use useful websites provided).State the

three factors that allow combustion to continue? Explain what
would happen if one of these factors wasn’t present.
(10 minutes)

3. Describe how burning fossil fuels in vehicle engines causes

pollution, use specific gases in your answer to support .
(15 minutes)
Answers
1.
Oxidation-Reacting with oxygen. For example, when a fuel combusts or when a
metal reacts with oxygen to form a metal oxide.

Combustion- is the scientific word for burning. In a combustion reaction a

substance reacts with oxygen from the air and transfers energy to the
surroundings as light and heat. The products of a combustion reaction are
called oxides.
3. Fossil fuels contain substances that
2. react with oxygen to produce polluting
gases. For example, carbon monoxide is
formed by the incomplete combustion of
carbon in the fuels, and nitrogen and
oxygen from the air react together to
form nitrogen oxides. Carbon monoxide
is poisonous and nitrogen oxides can
cause acid rain. Vehicles that burn
diesel fuel also release soot particles,
which can trigger asthma in some
people.

Energy revision

Individual tasks

1. Explain why your body need food? (5 minutes)

2. Explain why an Olympic swimmer needs more energy than a one year old
baby. Read the following link to help support you answer.
https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/guides/zyjx6sg/revision/2

(10 minutes)

3. Define renewable and non renewable energy. (5 minutes)

4. Name 5 ways that energy is transferred from a store of energy.

(5 minutes)
Answers
1. For growth and repair; to let you move and keep warm.

2.  A one-year-old baby needs 3850 kJ each day to continue

to grow, whereas an adult Olympic swimmer in training
needs 15,600 kJ to train each day, his energy
requirements are higher due to the amount of physical
exercise he is doing.

3. Renewable- An energy resource that will never run out

(e.g. solar power).
Non renewable –Any energy resource that will run out
because we cannot renew our supplies of it (e.g. oil).

4. Heating,light,sound,energy and force.
