Basic Grammar
Stress pattern of english language:

Syllable:
e.g. Object

Word:
e.g. Aslam bought a red car.

Sentence:
e.g. Who's there
Parts of speech:

● Noun
● Verb
● Adjective
● Adverb
● Pronoun
● Interjection
● Conjunction
● Preposition
Noun:

“Names a person, place, things or ideas.”

Example:
Amy is going to China on holiday.
Verb:

“Describes an action or experience.”

Example:
Sophie ran to school

because she was late.


Adjective:

“Describes a noun or a pronoun.”

Examples:

Fatima has a huge house

with 6 bedrooms.
Adverb:

“Describes a verb, an adjective or an adverb. It tells us how often, how,


where, or when.”

Example:

★ Sophie is always late for school.


★ Last night I slept really well.
Pronoun:

“Replace the name of a person, place, thing or an idea in a sentence.”

Examples:
Becky is a very nice friend. She always helps me with my
homework.
Interjection:

“Express strong emotion and is often followed by an exclamation mark.”

Example:
● Wow! The view is amazing.
● Hey! I haven't seen you in a long time.
Conjunction:

“Connect words, phrases or clauses in a sentence.”

Example:
● I like to watch the television and eat popcorn.
● My friend is very loud, whereas I’m very quiet.
Preposition:

“Describes the place, time or direction. It is used before a noun or a


pronoun.”

Example:
● The cat jumped over the box.
● Get into the car quickly before we are late to school.
Important verbs in english:

● To be
● To have
● To do
To be:

(Being, been)

Present: is, am, are


Past: was, were
Future: will be, shall be
To have:
(Having, had)

Present: has, have


Past: had
Future: will have, shall have
To do:
(doing, done)

Present: do, does


Past: did
Future: will do, shall do
Verbs with 1st person:

I:
Am, was, will be/ shall be, have, had, will have/ shall have, do, did, will
do/ shall do.

We:
Are, were, will be/ shall be, have, had, will have/ shall have,
Do, did, will do/ shall do
Verbs with 2nd person:

You:
Are, were, will be, have, had, will have, do, did, will do.
Verbs with 3rd person:

He, She and It:


Is, was, will be, has, had, will have, does, did, will do.

They:
Are, were, will be, have, had, will have, do, did, will do.
Have:

● Have = take
● Have = drink
● Have = eat
● Have = own
● Have = consist/ organize
● Have = to show relation or quality
To be:

● I …….. a student.
● We …….. students.
● She ..….. absent yesterday.
● They .……. in Delhi last month.
● Tina ……... successful in future.
To do:

● I …….. confidence.
● He ……. a problem.
● She ……. good percentage last year.
