What is meant by zoo?
• an establishment which maintains a collection of wild animals, typically in a park or
gardens, for study, conservation, or display to the public.

• Zoo, place where wild animals and domesticated animals are exhibited in captivity. In
zoos, animals can generally be given more intensive care than is possible in nature
reserves or sanctuaries. Most long-established zoos exhibit general collections of
animals, but some specialize in particular groups of animals.

• A zoological garden, which is sometimes referred to as an animal park or a menagerie, is

a facility which houses animals within an enclosure and displays them to the public in a
manner that is safe for everyone involved. Most of us referred to these parks as a zoo.
The first modern one was opened in 1828 for scientific study in London, and then
eventually became open to the public about 30 years later.
Yes zoos are mainly established for protection
of wild animals as reasons given below.
• Not only can we benefit from the experience of learning about new animals and
their habitats by visiting a zoo, but it also gives families an opportunity to spend
time together while enjoying the outdoors. This advantage comes at the expense
of the animals which are forced to spend their lives in an enclosure. Although
there are efforts to replicate a wild habitat, a small display area is hardly the same
as being free to roam.
• 1. A zoo can provide a protected environment for rare and endangered species.

Animal products like elephant tusks or shark fins create a financial market where the health and welfare of a
species is secondary to the profits which are possible. Some species have been poached to near extinction
because of this market. By having these animals in zoos, there is another layer of protection given to these
hunted species so that their survival chances are greater.
That hasn’t stopped some poachers from breaking into zoos to harvest what they want, but it is preventing
the levels of harm that we have seen in the past. Because poaching activities qualify as criminal conduct,
most attempts are thwarted.

2. We can protect some of the rarest animals in the world in zoos.

If you visit the Audubon Nature Institute in New Orleans, then you can see a rare white alligator. About 15
out of the 5 million animals currently alive are believed to have this rare condition that changes the color of
their skin. When you visit the Memphis Zoo, then you can see an Okapi. The Red Panda can be found in St.
Louis, and there are fewer than 10,000 of them in the world today.
Additional rare animals which receive protection in U.S. zoos include the Addax, Amur tiger, Borneo
elephant, and the Pacific walrus.
• 3. These facilities can provide an educational resource to their
community.

• Most zoos got their start because local scientists wanted to get to know wild and exotic
species better. Although the initial methods of retrieval were brutal, sometimes killing the
parents to take the young one back for study, the overall goal was to extend human
knowledge. This emphasis is still present today, with many facilities offering educational
programs, behind-the-scenes tours, and various activities which encourage visitors to
learn more about the animals which live there.
• We can see the staff members from local zoos making presentations at local schools and
businesses to raise awareness for what they do. Specific programs at the zoological
grounds encourage visitors to interact with the animals in unique ways. Although not
everyone can afford a visit to their local zoo, there are still plenty of ways to learn more
about the various animals who share this planet with us.
•Are zoos important to the conservation of zoo animals and wildlife?
Should zoos exist? Are they even important? Why?

• Traditionally, zoos were solely a source of entertainment for families. In 1793, when Paris, France opened the
worlds first modern zoo, employees and zookeepers knew very little about the animals they placed on display.
• In that era, zoos were really exciting. And until then, many visitors were not aware that many of the animals
that were on display even existed.  Although by offering them a glimpse of wildlife that they normally would
not see, this source of entertainment came with a high price. That price was the lives of many animals.
• Today, zoos still offer millions of people entertainment all around they world. But they are more than that.
• In fact, much more than that. Zoos are not just important, they are vital to the conservation of many species.
• These establishments ensure that there are educated and knowledgeable staff on hand to provide the
animals with the best care possible. This is to make sure that the animals are not just important, they are
vital! But they do more than that. Most zoos today have become ex situ breeding centers for several species
that would otherwise be greatly threatened with extinction in the wild.
• This makes zoos vital to the conservation of zoo animals and wildlife.
• In a 2006 article in DVM360, Zoo animal and wildlife veterinarian, Dr. Eric Miller, explains how zoos play a
bigger role than just entertainment. In fact, zoos are a key component in wildlife education, research and in
the preservation of all zoo animals and wildlife that are threatened with extinction

Zoos Protects Against Extinction

• It’s sad to say, but the world is currently going through a mass extinction due to human
activities encroaching on wildlife. A study published by Science Advances in 2020 found that
human population and activity has caused rapid global mammal extinctions over the past
126,000 years. Even currently, many species are going extinct across the globe, and many more
are facing the threat of extinction. Modern zoos and aquariums help combat these problems.
Breeding programs help preserve genetic biodiversity and help reintroduce critically
endangered species into the wild. Having animals in protection provides a reservoir against a
population crash in the wild. Zoos have helped remove animals from the endangered species
list and have saved many from extinction. Without the efforts of zoos, there would be fewer
animal species alive today!
• Zoos have a lot of significance in today's society. Zoos allow people to become more
educated on animals that people may never get to see outside of one. Zoos are important
because they help animals in conservation programs allowing animals at risk of extinction to
live and repopulate.
