Population Structure

• The population structure of a country is how it is made up of people of

different ages, and of males and females.
• The common method to show the structure is by a population
pyramid. This diagram is made up by putting two bar graphs (one for
male, one for female) side by side.
• From this you can read off what percentage of a population is of a
certain gender and age range.
Population Pyramid

• Population or age/sex pyramid shows the distribution of

individuals in a population
• What information can you determine from these pyramids?
• RECOGNISE AND INTERPRET POPULATION GRAPHS

1. What are the main differences between these populations?

2. How may these differences be accounted for?
• RECOGNISE AND INTERPRET POPULATION GRAPHS

1. Why are the graphs changing over time?

2. What is happening to the population?
3. Suggest some possible reasons for this.
• RECOGNISE AND INTERPRET POPULATION GRAPHS

Sigmoid graph showing population 1. Lag phase:

growth in a limited resource environment. Low numbers of breeders.
Birth > Death.

2. Exponential (Log) phase:

Rapid increase in growth rate.
3.
Birth >> death.
NUMBERS OF INDIVIDUALS

3. Stationary phase:
Population remains constant due
4. to limiting factor(s) ; environment
2. at carrying capacity.
Birth = Death.

4. Death phase:
Environment unable to support
1. population.
Birth < Death
