DRILLING PRACTICES

SURFACE BOP OPERATIONS

SURFACE BOP OPERATIONS
INTRODUCTION
A SURFACE BOP OPERATION IS THE
PRACTICE OF UTILISING A FLOATING
DRILLING UNIT (USUALLY 2nd OR 3rd
GENERATION) BY FITTING IT WITH A BOP
THAT IS SUSPENDED ABOVE THE
WATERLINE IN THE MOON POOL AREA.
THE CONCEPT WAS INITIALLY INTRODUCED
TO DRILL INEXPENSIVE EXPLORATION
WELLS IN A BENIGN ENVIRONMENT IN
WATER DEPTHS BETWEEN 100 - 500 ft.

IS IDEALLY SUITED TO AREA’S WHERE RELATIVELY BENIGN

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS PREVAIL. HOWEVER, MODERATE
ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS AND SEASONAL OPERATING
WINDOWS WILL ALSO PERMIT THIS TYPE OF APPLICATION.

A BASE CASE SYSTEM

* A BASE CASE MAY BE MODIFIED TO SUIT A PARTICULAR

PROGRAM OR PREFERENCE.

THE SYSTEM DESCRIBED IN THIS PRESENTATION

WILL CONSIST OF:

• 135/8” SURFACE BOP

• 133/8” CASING RISER STRING

• 133/8” UPPER AND LOWER STRESS JOINT ASSEMBLIES

• 135/8” SIS WITH A SINGLE BLIND/ SHEAR RAM WITH

UPPER AND LOWER HYDRAULIC CONNECTORS

• AN ACOUSTIC CONTROL SYSTEM FOR THE SIS

SURFACE BOP OPERATIONS
GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF SYSTEM COMPONENTS

THE SURFACE BOP STACK

BOP is located above the splash zone to minimise environmental loading

One Annular - 5000 psi working pressure.

3 x Ram preventers rated for 10,000 psi working pressure.

Middle ram must be capable of shearing 5” 19.5# S135 drillpipe.

All rams shall be equipped with a hydraulically actuated mechanical locking device.
SURFACE BOP OPERATIONS

CONTROL SYSTEM

Drilling unit’s existing control system can be used.

Hydraulic control lines have a suitable

termination point on BOP frame.

Jumper hoses connect from termination point to

a pod receptacle mounted on deck inside the
moon pool.

One of the drilling unit’s existing control pod’s

is landed inside the pod receptacle.

Hydraulic fluid from the accumulator may be set-up to by-pass

the pod hose reel if deemed appropriate.
SURFACE BOP OPERATIONS
TENSIONING RING

Purpose built to suite the number of tensioning

lines required.

Base case design is to fit on the underside of

the annular body and does not incorporate a
swivel mechanism.

Tensioning ring may be incorporated into the

telescopic joint.

In the case of DP operations, the tensioning arrangements

must also allow for heading changes.

Top tensioning may also be applied to the BOP frame.

This must be designed to withstand tensioning loads as
the BOP rests on the frame assembly.
SURFACE BOP OPERATIONS

TELESCOPIC JOINT
Connections for telescopic joint must consider
drilling unit’s existing equipment.

Design length must consider the following:

BOP remains out of splash zone.

Sufficient stroke length to withstand maximum vessel

excursion in the event of one mooring line failure.

Able to accommodate maximum vessel heave and tidal changes.

SURFACE BOP OPERATIONS
BOP CONNECTOR AND UPPER RISER MANDREL

Base case utilises 135/8” Vetco H-4 connector (or

similar) installed below the surface BOP.

The purpose of the upper riser mandrel is to serve as a

connection between the surface BOP and the riser.

The riser mandrel will contain the appropriate load shoulders

and seal area’s for pressure testing and if the program requires,
surface casing tieback’s.
SURFACE BOP OPERATIONS

STRESS JOINTS
Used to mitigate the affect of fatigue in the riser at known “Hot
Spots” located just below the surface BOP and just above the SIS.
Things that will affect the design considerations of the
stress joint will be dependent on:

• Fatigue life requirements.

• Vessel motion.
• Manufacturing limitations.

• Operational requirements.

Approximately 22 ft long N80 material with a tapered wall.

SURFACE BOP OPERATIONS
STRESS JOINT SAVER SUBS

Nothing more than an extension of the stress joint design.

Easier to handle, re-machine and less expensive.

One end flanged the other has a threaded casing

connection to connect to the riser.

Uniform wall thickness 13 ft long and made of N80 material.

Two spare saver subs recommended.

SURFACE BOP OPERATIONS

RISER

Base case considers the use of 133/8” grade P110, 68#

casing with NSCC connections.

Recommended practice is to use the casing as riser for 1 well only.

Subsequent use of the riser is as casing below the mudline.

SURFACE BOP OPERATIONS

SIS (SEAFLOOR ISOLATION SYSTEM)

Serves as a second barrier in surface BOP drilling operations.

Has the capability to shut the well in in the event of an

emergency such as a catastrophic riser failure.

Consists of:

• Upper and Lower hydraulic connectors.

• Blind/Shear ram must be capable of shearing 5” 19.5# S135 drillpipe.

• ROV intervention system.

• Acoustic control system.
