Types of Bias

The document defines and provides examples of five types of bias: confirmation bias, anchoring bias, halo effect, media bias, and conformity bias. Confirmation bias involves favoring information that confirms one's own beliefs. Anchoring bias means relying too heavily on initial information. The halo effect occurs when one aspect of a person influences perceptions of other aspects. Media bias is when journalists select what to report in a way that favors certain views. Conformity bias is making decisions simply to please a group rather than due to one's own views.

TYPES OF

BIAS
OBJECTIVES:
- Recognize the type of bias in the
situation presented;
BIAS is a tendency to lean in a certain
direction, either in favor of or against a
particular thing. It means a tendency to favor or
support or go against a particular person or
point of view over another resulting in
unfairness.
TYPES OF BIAS:
1. CONFIRMATION
2. ANCHORING BIAS
3. HALO EFFECT
4. MEDIA BIAS
5. CONFORMITY
1. CONFIRMATION - This happens when one tends to
search for, interpret, favor, and remember
information supporting one's belief and views.

Example: When she heard not pleasant news about her

high school classmate, she immediately asked the
mother and prove that she was right.
2. ANCHORING BIAS - This happens when people are
too relied on current information or the initial
information they find in decision-making.

Example: Ellen chose Dave to do the task because she

believed he is the only one who can do it.
3. HALO EFFECT - This happens when one sees the
wonderful thing about a person and let the
perceptions on everything else about that person be
distorted.

Example: The well-behaved student was the only

exempted from taking the test.
4. MEDIA BIAS - This happens when the journalists
and news producers in the mass media select what to
report and cover.

Example: Van, a witness to an incident, attests that the

reported news is far from what he sees because the
events are reversed and untrue.
5. CONFORMITY - This happens when one makes a
wrong or uncomfortable decision to please a group of
people.

Example: I am not good at performing. I joined the

contest to make them happy.
