Solar Energy is radiant energy emitted
by the sun. It is also known as
SOLAR POWER.
HISTORY
Solar energy was used by humans as early as 7th century B.C. when humans used magnifying glass materials
to light fires. Later, the Greeks and Romans used mirrors to light torches for religious ceremonies. Sunrooms
were also used in buildings, and ancestors to the Pueblo Native Americans used them to capture the sun's
warmth during cold winter months. In the late 1700s and 1800s, researchers and scientists harnessed the power
of the sun to power ovens for long voyages and steamboats.
Charles Fritts - produced the first
solar cells made from selenium
wafers in 1883, but solar cells as
we know them today are made
with silicon, not selenium.

Daryl Chapin, Calvin Fuller, and

Gerald Pearson's creation of the
silicon photovoltaic (PV) cell at
Bell Labs in 1954 is seen as the
true invention of PV technology, as
it was the first instance of a solar
technology that could actually
power an electric device for
several hours of a day.

Solar Energy
Solar power is energy from the sun that is converted into
thermal or electrical energy. Solar energy is the cleanest and
most abundant renewable energy source available.

The total amount of solar energy incident on Earth is vastly in

excess of the world’s current and anticipated energy
requirements. If suitably harnessed, this highly diffused source
has the potential to satisfy all future energy needs. In the 21st
century solar energy is expected to become increasingly
attractive as a renewable energy source because of its
inexhaustible supply and its nonpolluting character, in stark
contrast to the finite fossil fuels coal, petroleum, and natural
gas.
Solar There are three main ways to harness solar energy: photovoltaics, solar heating
& cooling, and concentrating solar power. Photovoltaics generate electricity

Technologies
directly from sunlight via an electronic process and can be used to power
anything from small electronics such as calculators and road signs up to homes
and large commercial businesses.

Solar heating & cooling (SHC) and concentrating solar power (CSP)
applications both use the heat generated by the sun to provide space or water
heating in the case of SHC systems, or to run traditional electricity-generating
turbines in the case of CSP power plants.
- A solar panel, or solar module, is one component of a photovoltaic system.
They are constructed out of a series of photovoltaic cells arranged into a panel.
They come in a variety of rectangular shapes and are installed in combination to
generate electricity. Solar panels, sometimes also called photovoltaics collect
energy from the Sun in the form of sunlight and convert it into electricity that
can be used to power homes or businesses. These panels can be used to
supplement a building's electricity or provide power at remote locations.

Solar cells

Solar cells are semi-conductor

devices which use sunlight to
produce electricity. They are
manufactured and processed in a
similar fashion as computer memory
chips. Solar cells are primarily made
up of silicon which absorbs the
photons emitted by sun’s rays.
What is a photon?

Photons carry solar energy

Sunlight is composed of photons, or particles of solar energy. These

photons contain varying amounts of energy that correspond to the
different wavelengths of the solar spectrum. A PV cell is made of
semiconductor material. When photons strike a PV cell, they may reflect
off the cell, pass through the cell, or be absorbed by the semiconductor
material. Only the absorbed photons provide energy to generate
electricity.

When the semiconductor material absorbs enough sunlight (solar

energy), electrons are dislodged from the material's atoms. Special
treatment of the material surface during manufacturing makes the front
surface of the cell more receptive to the dislodged, or free, electrons so
that the electrons naturally migrate to the surface of the cell.
How solar is used

Solar power works by converting energy from the sun

into power. There are two forms of energy generated
from the sun for our use – electricity and heat. Both
are generated through the use of solar panels.

Solar energy is a very flexible energy technology: it

can be built as distributed generation (located at or
near the point of use) or as a central-station, utility-
scale solar power plant (similar to traditional power
plants). Both of these methods can also store the
energy they produce for distribution after the sun sets,
using cutting edge solar + storage technologies.

All of these applications depend on supportive policy frameworks at the local, state and federal level to ensure
consumers and businesses have fair access to clean energy technologies like solar.
The solar market today

Global solar capacity doubled in 3 years from 2018,

bringing the world’s solar fleet to one Terawatt
capacity in April 2022. The global solar market is
growing exponentially. It took around a decade for
world-wide solar capacity to reach 1 TW, from 100
GW in 2012. In just 3 years, Solar Power Europe
predicts global solar to more than double to 2.3 TW
in 2025.

Solar: the fastest growing energy technology

Solar remains the fastest growing renewable energy, representing over half of the 302 GW of renewable capacity
installed internationally in 2021. With 168 GW of additions, solar installed over 70 GW more than the next greatest
installer – wind – and more than all non-solar renewables combined.
RENEWABLE ENERGY SPOTS IN THE PHILIPPINES

- The Philippines as a tropical archipelago has the potential to

generate a lot of energy from natural resources. In recent years,
solar panels in the Philippines have come to the forefront in cost
efficiency with regular consumers.

Solar energy is used as a source of energy in the Philippines through industrial sized photovoltaic plants in the
country. The Philippines has only recently incorporated large scale solar farms in the country, despite the fact
that the country is geographically located in a region that receives a high amount of sunlight each year. Major
solar farms in the Philippines can be found in Cavite, Pampanga, Ilocos Norte, and Cagayan de Oro.
