Sleep Therapy
● It is an assessment and treatment of sleep disorders such as insomnia.
● Age: 18 and older

● Behavioral treatment: Sleep Restriction Therapy

● – works to decrease variability in the timing
of sleep while increasing the depth of sleep.

Step 1: Determine your allowed Time in Bed.

Step 2: Set a wake time
Step 3: Set a bed-time
Step 4: Stick to this sleep schedule as closely as possible for at least two weeks

WORK THERAPY
& ERGONOMICS
DEFINING WORK THERAPY
● It is the use of compensated or uncompensated work activities as a therapeutic
agent for individuals with mental or physical disorders

● For example, self-esteem or interpersonal or cognitive skills may be enhanced

when these individuals function in a safe, controlled environment, where they may
either acquire fundamental training for new skills or receive retraining in skills that
have been lost or diminished
ERGONOMICS
● It is the the scientific study of people and their
working conditions, especially done in order to
improve effectiveness

● It emerged as early as the 20th century when doctors

noted that workers who maintained one position for
longer periods developed musculoskeletal problems

● Growing research on the subject establishes clear

relations between certain jobs and the prevalence of
musculoskeletal issues
TYPES OF ERGONOMICS
● PHYSICAL ERGONOMICS: human body’s
response to physical and physiological
demands

● COGNITIVE ERGONOMICS: mental

processes and capacities of humans at work

● ORGANIZATIONAL ERGONOMICS:
organisational structure, policies and
processes
Objectives of Ergonomics
● Improve the efficiency of operation by taking into
account a typical person’s size, strength, speed, visual
acuity, physiological stressors, such as fatigue, speed of
decision making and demands on memory and
perception.
● To maximize productivity while lowering risk of
Musculoskeletal Disorders (MSD)
○ MSD develops as a result of long term exposure to combination
of ergonomics risk factors such as repetition, high forces and
awkward posture.
■ Examples of MSD include carpal tunnel syndrome,
tendonitis and back disorder.
Effects of Ergonomics
● Classification of ergonomic injury
○ Cumulative Trauma Disorder
■ Tendon disorder
■ Nerve Disorder
■ Neurovascular Disorder
○ Strains/ Sprains
■ Lifting heavy objects in awkward
position
Ways to prevent ergonomic injuries

● Warm up and stretch before activities that are repetitive, static or

prolonged
● Take frequent breaks from any sustained posture-ideally every 20-30
mins
● Recognize signs of discomfort and inflammation
● Maintain neutral posture
○ Maintain erect position of back and neck with shoulder relaxed
○ Keep upper arms close to body, elbows 90-100 degrees
○ Keep feet flat on floor
○ Wrist as neutral as possible
● Modify tasks
○ Rotate heavy and or repetitive tasks with lighter less repetitive
tasks
● Practice Wellness at home and work
○ Exercise the body
○ Provide nutrition rich food to self
○ Relax your spirit and mind
Advantages of Ergonomics

● Maximizing productivity, efficiency and equality

● Reduce MSD risk factors by eliminating/
minimizing ergonomic injury risk factors.
● Improve employee morale
● Help do work safely
● Make people more comfortable at work and
prevent injury
