Cells and Organisms

Grade VI
Characteristics of Living Organisms
Lesson 1
Objective:
Recognise the seven characteristics common to living things and their
importance for the survival of organisms.
Movement

● An action by an organism causing a change

of position or place
Respiration

● The chemical reactions that break down nutrient molecules in living cells to release energy
Sensitivity

● the ability to detect and respond to changes in the environment

Growth

a permanent increase in size

Reproduction

● the processes that make more of the same kind of organism

Excretion

● the removal from organisms of toxic

materials and substances in excess
of requirements
Nutrition

the taking in of materials for energy,

growth and development
Written Work

Q1.: Which characteristics of living organism you possess while sitting in your classroom?

Q2: A car is sensitive to touch and can show the movement too. Can we classify that car as a living
organism? yes/no, justify your answer with logical reason.
Cells, Tissues and Organs
Lesson 2

Learning Outcome:

Describe that cells are the basic units of life – all living things are made of cells.
Cell to Organism
Cell is a basic unit of life

1. Cell is the structural & functional unit of living organism

2. Type of Cell On the basis of the structure of nucleus cell is of two types-

Prokaryotic cell ( e.g. Bacteria)

Eukaryotic cell ( e.g. Human cell)

Function of Cell

Ingestion & assimilation – the process by which food substances are taken into the cells of the body after they have been
digested and absorbed.

Growth & repair – Development & regeneration of organs.

Metabolism – The sum of all the chemical & physical changes that takes place within the body.

Breathing– the process of gaseous exchange.

Excretion – elimination of wastes product from the body.

Tissue

Collection of cell having similar structure &

performing a common function is called tissue.
Examples of Types of tissues

● Onion Epidermis: It covers the surface of ● Ciliated Epithelium: It lines the tubes
the layers inside the onion. leading down to our lungs (Trachea,
Bronchus). The cilia all wave together like
grass in the wind.
Think about it!!

Q. What is the function of the ciliated epithelium tissue?

Organs and organ systems

Organ: Collection of tissues united together to perform a particular function is called organ.

Examples: The skin is one of the human body’s largest organs. Brain, Heart, lungs are some examples of human organs.

Leaves, fruits, flowers are some examples of plant organs.

Organ System: Set of organs that all work together to carry out the same function .
Homework

Find out the names and functions of the different organs that are part of one system in the human body.

Choose from: Digestive system, circulatory system, respiratory system or skeletal system
