1. What is ISO

 The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) is a body that comprises standards organizations
from 163 countries. Companies and individuals cannot be members of ISO; rather, the entity includes full
members (member bodies), correspondent members, and subscribers. Examples include the British
Standards Institution (BSI) for the United Kingdom, the Standards Council of Canada, and the American
National Standards Institute (ANSI). ISO’s many member-deliberated standards help organizations
worldwide meet the needs of customers and stakeholders and comply with regulations and statutes.
2 QUALITY STANDARD OF
ISO 9000
2.1 HISTORY OF ISO 9000

 ISO 9000, originally published in 1978 by the International

Organization for Standardization (ISO).

 Underwent major revision in 2000 with the concept of process

management.

 Revised again in 2008 which re-narrate ISO 9001:2000 with few

clarifications to the existing requirements of ISO 9001:2000

 Current revision of ISO 9000 and ISO 9001 was published in

September 2015
2.2 WHAT IS ISO 9000

 ISO 9000 is a family of quality improvement standards released by ISO. The

9000 series helps an organization define steps to create and maintain a quality
management system.
 ISO 9000 is one among the most popular standards of ISO.
 ISO 9000 is:
 A series of Quality Management System (QMS) standards,
 Provide guidance and tools for companies and organizations,
 To ensure that their products and services
consistently meet customer’s requirements,
 For consistent improvement in quality
2.3 ISO 9000 vs. ISO 9001

 ISO 9000 is a series/family of

standards
 ISO 9000 family standard also
contains an individual standard named
ISO 9000
 ISO 9001 is a standard within a family
 ISO 9001 is the only standard within the
ISO 9000 family to which organizations
can certify.

2.5 THE Myths of ISO 9000

Some of the other myths companies commonly associate with ISO 9000:

 It guarantees customers.
 If you’re certified, your products must be top quality.
 A consultant can prepare the certification documentation for you.
 It’s a waste of money and time.
 The ISO 9000 requirements are complicated.
 Certification is the job of the quality-control department.

certifications as their products cross from country to country.

Several parts of the standard have been accepted or are currently under review by ISO
subcommittees and participating countries

 The core of the ISO 14000 standards is contained in ISO 14000, which lays out the
guidelines for putting an environmental management system (EMS) in place.
 Here are standards under ISO 14000:
 ISO 14001: Specification of Environmental Management Systems

 ISO 14010 – ISO 14015: Environmental Auditing and Related Activities
 ISO 14020 – ISO 14024: Environmental Labeling
 ISO 14031 and ISO 14032: Environmental Performance Evaluation
 ISO 14040 – ISO 14043: Life Cycle Assessment
 ISO 14050: Terms and Definitions

 The Plan cycle deals with the beginning stages of an organization becoming ISO 14001-compliant.
 The Check cycle deals with checking and correcting errors.
 The Do cycle is the implementation and operation of the ISO 14001 standard within an
organization.
 The Review cycle is a review of the entire process by the organization's top management.
 And the Improve cycle is a cycle that never ends as an organization continually finds ways to
improve their EMS.
