Internet Software Requirements
To Connect to the Internet and access information or other
services, you need an implementation of the software TCP/IP
(Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol)

TCP/IP is a set of rules that defines how computers interact

or communicate with each other to transfer data from one
computer to another over the Internet.

TCP/IP enables hardware and operating systems software from

different computers to communicate
Internet Addresses
How does the TTPost know where to deliver a letter addressed to
YOU?
Internet Addresses
Yes! You have a Postal address…. But on the Internet, each
computer has a unique address that identifies it as a “NODE” (a
specific point) of the global Internet. This unique address is
called the IP address (Internet Protocol address)
It is a 32-bit address consisting of four sets of up to 3 digits each
separated by full stops.. Eg. 196.361.232.4
Internet Addresses

This seems like a very tedious number to remember.

Yes, that is why the Domain Name System (DNS) was
developed.

A domain specifies the location of a host computer on the

Internet. The DNS allows the Internet host to find another
Internet Host, by translating the IP address of the computer
into a host name
Email Addresses
Look at the email address: bestfriedchicken@gmail.com

You should notice it has two sections. The first part is the userid. This
describes ‘WHO’ is at the address. The 2nd part is separated with the @
sign which gives the domain name of the address.
Each component is separated by a period (.)
Eg. Your.name@yourdomain.com

So we know the following:

1. The first part says who is at the address

2. The 2nd part provides the domain name such as an ISP, a company,
organisation
3. The 3rd part gives the top level domain name extension eg: .com
which means it is a commercial organisation

World Wide Web
Is the World Wide Web different from the Internet?
YES!!. The World Wide Web is an information system on the Internet which allows
documents to be connected to other documents by hypertext links, enabling the user
to search for information by moving from one document to another.
Hypermedia, an extension of the term hypertext which includes graphics, audio, video,
plain text and hyperlinks.

Hyperlink is a reference to data that the reader can directly follow either by clicking
or by hovering. A hyperlink points to a whole document or to a specific element within
a document. Hypertext is text with hyperlinks.eg https://www.howstuffworks.com
This is a hyperlink since it takes you to the site called how stuff works

A website is a collection of hypertext or hypermedia documents available in one

place on the world wide web
