What do you do in IT?
 What are you supposed to be doing as an IT Professional?
 IT Professionals are specialized staff that know how to accelerate/accomplish work using Technology
resources
 IT Professionals make business processes more efficient
 IT Professionals should be part of the decision making to align business goals to leverage Technology.
 Example: IT Professionals can be involved creating the avenue to help a retail business to maximize profit
by the following:
 Identifying potential customers and suppliers (Database reporting)
 Disseminate information through the use of emails, VOIP, Linkedin, WhatsApp
 Enable social awareness of products ( twitter, facebook, youtube)
 Create new shopping experience (virtual store/online shoping)
Who works in IT (what are some common
IT careers)
 Software Developers – Create Software products, Create reporting from databases, create mobile apps,
maintain proprietary software
 System and Network Engineers – Maintain the infrastructure for the IT users and software to run on.
Also referred to as the road. Consist of the network, servers, storage and datacenters that host the
application.
 Security experts – Fight struggle against SPAM, Hackers, malware and ransomware
 Technicians – work directly with non-IT staff to resolve Computer related problems (PC, printers,
laptops, tablets, etc.)
 Trainers – Acclimatize non-IT person to applications and system so that the greatest Return on
Investment in Technology is achieved
 Managers and executives – Align IT with business goals and build strategy around IT infracture,
Applications and services.
What is asked of IT Professionals
 Better to ask what IT professionals do not do……
 IT work can be broadly defined as:
 Projects – a temporary task with a defind beginning and end, to produce a unique (usually new) product or
service.
 Operations – A frequently repeated task dealing with the maintenance or upkeep of an existing product or
process.
 It work is often performed in Off-hours.
 IT work may involve frequent travel.
 IT work has moved to 60 % remote since the Covid pandemic has struck the world.
What role exist in IT?

 Internal IT Staff – Staff that works at a firm/organization. They are technology generalist who works
in the business and resolves most IT issues at the company. Some companies also have a few specialist
such as software developers, Database administrators, Network engineer, Data Scientist, Business
Intelligence Experts.
 IT Consultants – Take up IT project and leads the implementation of the IT Project.
 Service providers – Telecommunication providers that lease services to residential, business and
government customers.
