Traditional House of South Sumatra
The name of this house is comes from two words, five and gold (In Bahasa “Lima” and “Emas”).
Its main characteristic is that the house has a support pole with a height of about 2 meters from the ground.
Rumah Rakit
This house is built on a raft. The foundation of the house is made of wooden beams and
bamboo strips with poles tied to posts embedded in the riverside.
Rumah Baghi (Tatahan)
This a traditional Besemah house that has a variety of decorations in certain parts such as
doors, windows, walls and poles. This decoration is part of the philosophy of the Besemah
society, which is unique and has almost the same shape and pattern of decoration in each
house.

1. Baju Batabue
2. Pakaian Limpapeh Rumah Nan Gadang
3. Koto Gadang
Baju Batabue
This outfit has its own characteristics, namely the head cover which has a shape like the
roof of a traditional West Sumatra house. In general, these clothes have different
designs but definitely have the same special features.
Pakaian Limapeh Rumah Gadang
This traditional dress does look luxurious because it is studded with gold threads that make it look
even more sparkling. The sprinkling of gold thread in this garment has a unique philosophical
meaning, which indicates the vastness of the Minangkabau natural wealth.
Koto Gadang
This weapon is a special wavy sword that can only be inserted by a traditional leader in his waist during
certain events.
This weapon is always sharpened on both the right and the left. This means that the rulers are able to
give, mandate, and provide justice to all people.
Piarik
Piarik is a traditional weapon with three eyes or easily known as the Trident. This unique shape is
the result of an adaptation of the Hindu Shiva culture right before Islam made its way into West
Sumatra.
Karumbiak
With the size of only the fist of an adult's hand, this weapon is very dangerous. The shape
itself is inspired by tiger claws. This weapon has been adapted by the United States army
and made a compulsory weapon.
Sumpitan
The blowpipe is a very suitable weapon for long-range attack techniques. Moreover, an attack
using this weapon does not make a sound. Not only silent, the level of accuracy given is also very
high, which can reach 300 meters. From this it is clear why this weapon is suitable for use in times
of war with guerrilla techniques.
