Stress Coping Strategies

This study examined the stress coping strategies of 75 grade 12 accounting, business, and management students in Capiz National High School in the Philippines. The main findings were: 1) Students reported their main source of stress as academic demands. 2) Their most common coping strategy was distancing themselves from the stressor, while escape-avoidance was the least used strategy. 3) Students faced stress by thinking positively and problem-solving, while reducing stress by engaging in distracting activities.

Theoritical Framework

This study was anchored on the Theory of


Cognitive Appraisal by Folkman & Lazarus.
According to this theory, coping strategies can be
understood as either: problem based; where the
stressors is perceived as a challenge and we
generate strategies to manage it or solutions to
remove it, or emotional based; where the problem
is considered to be a threat that cannot be
revolved and various coping strategies such as
avoidance, distancing and acceptance are
employed.

INTERVIEW RESULTS
Q1. How would you describe the term “stress”?
All of the participants viewed stress as a negative force which had a
negative impact in their lives.

Q2. What sort of problems would most likely make you


feel irritated or in need of help? Why?

Most of the respondents answered that school works were the main
cause of their stress. There were few different answers such as losing on
online games and patience but majority of the answers were related to
academic.
Q3. Do you yourself experiencing stress?

100% or all of the 10 respondents sees theirs selves experiencing stress.

Q4. In the last month, how often have you experienced


stress?

Eight out of ten (80%) respondents said that they experienced stress
sometimes while the remaining two (20%) respondents experienced stress
fairly often.
Q5. If you had to describe yourself, what sort of person
are you?
5 out of ten respondents (50%) think that they have good abilities in
dealing with the problems while the other 50% need more abilities in dealing
with problems. None of them think that they need help.

Q6. Please describe the steps you would undertake in


handling or dealing with this stressful situation?
 How do you face it?
Most of the participants used Planful Problem-Solving in facing stressful
situations.
 How do you reduce stress?
Respondents reduce their stress through doing things that can take their
mind out of it.

CONCLUSION
Conclusion

1. The main source of stress of the students is the Academic Domain. Being
unable to cope up with school works can trigger the stress of the students.
2. Distancing is the most common used coping strategies of the students while
Escape-Avoidance is the least common used coping strategy.
3. Students face stressful situations by thinking positively and through coming
up with possible ways to overcome it.
4. Respondents reduce stress through doing things that could make them busy
and can make them able to take their mind out of it.

RECOMMENDATION
Recommendation

1. Future research on how students manage their studies and at the


same time coping up with stress.
2. Study along with how effective is distancing is minimize the
impact of stress on students.
3. Future studies about what are the positive things or ways a
stressed person do in order to overcome stress.
4. Study about how doing things that could make them busy could
lessen the student’s stress.
