EARTH AND LIFE

SCIENCE
Quarter 1- Module 1
Origin and Structure of
the Earth
PREPARED BY:

MS. KIMBERLY JOY C. ASTORGA

SUBJECT TEACHER
MODULE 1: ORIGIN AND
STRUCTURE OF THE EARTH
Lesson 1: Planet Earth
Lesson 2: The Subsystems of the Earth
Lesson 3: Minerals
PLANET EARTH IS CONSIDERED HABITABLE
BECAUSE OF THE FOLLOWING:
1. It has the right distance from the sun.
2. It is protected from harmful solar radiation by its magnetic
field.
3. It is kept warm by an insulating atmosphere.
4. It has the right amount of ingredients for life, including
water and carbon.
THE FOUR EARTH’S
SUBSYSTEMS
1. ATMOSPHERE
2. BIOSPHERE
3. GEOSPHERE
4. HYDROSPHERE
LESSON 3
MINERA
LS
COMPETENCY:
Identify common rock-forming minerals using their physical and chemical properties.
(S11/12ES-la-e-5)

OBJECTIVES:
At the end of this lesson, he learners shall be able to:
1. Describe the characteristics of minerals.
2. Explain the properties of minerals.
MINERALS
Minerals are the building blocks of rocks. There are 3500 known
minerals in the Earth’s crust.

We use them in everyday life:

• Glass (quartz)
• Lead in Pencils (graphite)
• Toothpaste ( Flourite)
• Make up (Talc, mulcovite)
• Jewelry ( gold, silver, gemstones)

COMPOSITION
MINERALS
Minerals are naturally occurring,
inorganic solid materials with
crystalline structure due to its specific
chemical composition.

PROPERTIES OF MINERALS
A. COLOR – the most obvious
property. Mineral’s color may
change depending on the surface

B. STREAK- color of mineral in

powdered form
C. HARDNESS- minerals D. CLEAVAGE - minerals
resistance to scratching resistance to and fracture.
E. CRYSTALLINE STRUCTURE OR HABIT-
a set of faces that have a definite geometric relationship to each other
F. DIAPHANEITY/Amount of Transparency - ability to allow light to
pass through it. This is affected by chemical makeup of the mineral sample.
G. LUSTER- how light is reflected off a surface

• Glassy – reflects light like a piece of glass does

• Metallic – reflects light like a piece of metal does
H. TENACITY- describes the minerals reaction to stress.
• Brittleness- a mineral turns into powder
• Malleability- a mineral can be flattened by pounding with a hammer.
• Ductility- A mineral can be stretched into wire.
• Flexible but inelastic- Minerals are bent but they remain in the new
position.
• Flexible and elastic- Minerals are bent, and they bring back to their
original position.
• Sectility- ability of minerals to be sliced by a knife.
SPECIAL PROPERTIES
TASTE
FLOURESCENCE
MAGNETISM
