 Openings to all compartments with in the red

zone, when open, are deemed to be of immediate
risk to WT integrity. All such openings are known
as “red openings”

 The order “close all red openings” means

that it is an emergency. The order over rides 2 clip
marking in force for a red opening to be open
TYPES OF WT MARKINGS

 `X’ and `Y’ on doors, hatches, drain

cocks and ventilation opening which affect
water tight integrity in red zone

 `Z’ on similar opening outside red zone

to give water tight integrity and protection
against blast flash and fire
METHOD OF MARKING

 `X’, `Y’, and `Z’ letters painted in black on

upper centre of the door and hatch (size – 75 mm)
For drain cocks, valves, Vent flaps/closures (size –

WATERTIGHT CONDITIONS
a. In peace:
Condition X-ray (X openings shut) Harbour and normal cruising.

Condition Yankee (X and Y shut) Dangerous circumstances (eg

navigational hazards, exercises).

Condition Zulu (X, Y and Z shut) As required for exercise.

b. In war:

Condition Yankee (X and Y shut) Harbour and normal cruising.

Condition Zulu (X, Y and Z shut) Action or relaxed action.

If a routine is laid down for opening the various
compartments that have to be visited regularly, the number open
at any one time can be kept small. For example:

Hangar access door Y or Z with A.
Examples of Typical Markings (Notes)
Notes:

1. In some ships, gangway doors in the Red Risk Zone are in such
continual use that even Y 2-clip markings are not acceptable. With
careful consideration, such doors may be marked Z or, in extreme
cases, where frequency and rapid passage is needed even in State 1,
Z 2-clip might be more appropriate.

2. In war, it may be necessary to post orders at the entrance to ensure

that if the space is in the Red Risk Zone, and occupied, the last man
out shuts the opening.

3. These openings may need an M in addition. Doors and hatches that

give access between machinery spaces and citadels or gas-free
spaces, must bear a gastight marking in addition to the watertight
marking.
W/T CONTROL QUALIFYING SYMBOLS

 2 CLIPS.

 On doors and hatches where the normal

volume of traffic makes full clipping
impracticable
 It may also be used on opening selected
as routes to shelter positions
 The opening to be so marked are
decided by ship’s officers
 All clips are to be put on in emergency
W/T CONTROL QUALIFYING SYMBOLS

deemed to be a risk to GT integrity must be marked
with an orange letter ‘A’ or ‘M’ and GT qualifying
symbol (e.g `Cleansing station’, `citadel in/out’,

 Orange letter `R’ is used on openings / fittings

which need to be open for recirculation in gas tight
condition Alfa

 `Open in Alfa’ is marked on the weather deck

flaps of air filtration unit (AFU)
METHOD OF MARKING

 The GT markings are `A’, `M’, and `R’ letters

tallies painted in orange colour

 Doors / hatches - 75 mm

 Valves, vent fans,

boundaries of citadel and gas free spaces

 User Control (M). Openings which require to

be controlled by the user in GT condition only must
be marked with letter `M’ it may be used alone or
in addition to WT risk and control marking

 Recirculation(R). Fittings required for
