Getting Ready for

Extreme
Environmental
Conditions
GECALAO, MARK ANTHONY D.
Humid and Hot Weather
Exercising in hot and humid causes the
body to increase temperature. You will notice
that when you exercise, your body temperature
will rises and you start to sweat. As your sweat
evaporates, your body is cooled. In humid
conditions, however, sweat does not cooled
effectively.
In the process, very little heat from
your body is released. When your body
temperature stays elevated or continues to
increase, hyperthermia is may the occur. And
the temperature of the person will rise above
the 40.6 degree Celsius, it is commonly for
children 2 years old below, with heart disease,
diabetes, and also elder that may cause brain or
internal damage which can lead to death.
For the body adapt to humid and
hot weather conditions, it is important to
consider good preparations to avoid
hyperthermia.
Symptoms of Hyperthermia
- Heat cramps
- Heat exhaustion
- Heat stroke
- Nose Bleeding
• Nose Bleeding – aren't usually
serious. However, frequent or
heavy nosebleeds may indicate
more serious health problems,
such as high blood pressure or a
blood clotting disorder, and
should be checked. Excessive
bleeding over a prolonged period
of time can also lead to further
problems such as anemia.
Procedure how to treat Nose Bleeding
1. Scene Safety
2. Level of Consciousness
3. Check ABC(Airway Breathing
Circulation)
4. Lean forward & chin down
5. Pinch for 10 Minute
6. Call Emergency Hotline

•Heat cramps – these
refer to muscle
cramps caused by
extreme heat
exposure and low
water consumption.

2. Level of Consciousness
3. Check ABC(Airway Breathing
Circulation)
4. Counter Stretch
5. Cold Compress
6. Give water or Oral Rehydration Solution
7. Rest
• Heat exhaustion – this is
caused by excessive heat
exposure which is
characterized by paleness,
sweat skin, tiredness,
nausea, dizziness, muscle
cramps, and sometimes
vomiting fainting. The body
temperature can at times be
normal or slightly above
normal.

3. Check ABC(Airway Breathing
Circulation)
4. Elevate Legs and Cold compress
5. Give water or Oral Rehydration Solution
6. Call Emergency Hotline
• Heat stroke – this is caused
by every high body
temperature and can lead
to vomiting and
uncontrollable shaking. It
occurs because the body is
overheating and is not able
to keep because it can lead
to death.

•To avoid Hyperthermia, remember the following:
•Start slowly – your body adapts to physical activity in
hot weather once exposed it. Start slowly and then
increase the duration and intensity incrementally.

•Hydrate properly – in hot weather conditions, your

body will perspire more than in normal conditions.
Your body needs to replace lost water, and that is why
proper hydration is important before, during, and
after your physical activity.
•Use appropriate clothing – wear clothing that lets air
pass through to cool your body. Wear light-colored
clothing too, as light colors deflect the sun’s heat;
conversely, dark colors absorb heat. There are also
clothes made of technologically advanced fibers that
“cool” the body during physical activity in hot weather
conditions. If available, try wearing them so you can
find out if they can help you perform better.
•Rest periodically – exercise generates body heat; thus,
you need proper rest in cooler areas to help your body
cool off for a while.
•Avoid exercising in extreme heat and humidity – as the
sayings goes, “Prevention is better than cure.”So, if you
can avoid engaging in physical activities in hot and humid
conditions, then do so. If necessary, postpone or cancel
your activity if the temperature is not suited for physical
activity. Do your research and find out the weather
condition for the day and time of your activity.
•If heart-related injury happens, do first aid and get help
– Find a cool place and go there immediately. Then apply
wet towels on your body and drink lots of water. Seek
immediate medical help as well.
Extreme cold conditions
Just as high-conditions pose
health risks, low temperature
conditions pose a set of health risks.
Extreme cold conditions can result in
any of the following.
• Hypothermia - this condition
is the rapid cooling of the
body wherein the temperature
drops quickly. Symptoms of
hyperthermia include
shivering, drowsiness, lack of
coordination, slurred speech
and possible loss of
consciousness.
Hyperthermia and
Hypothermia are both can
affect the body while
engaging in physical
activities.
• Frostbite – in this condition,
part of the body become frozen.
Gangrene then sets in as tissue
is damaged by the extreme cold.
A person suffering from
frostbite usually feels no pain,
making the condition more
dangerous. Frostbite is a serious
medical condition that
necessitates immediate medical
help.
• In certain cases, the affected
areas often have to be
amputated. Symptoms of
frostbite include
discoloration of skin to white
or grayish yellow, pain that
will eventually subside, and
eventual numbness.
Procedure how to treat 1st Degree Frostbite
1. Scene Safety (Bring to a safe place)
2. Level of Consciousness
3. Check ABC(Airway Breathing Circulation)
4. Remove Jewelry
5. Field re-warm Skin to skin
6. Warm Rest
7. Do not Massage
Procedure how to treat 2nd Degree Frostbite
1. Scene Safety (Bring to a safe place)
2. Level of Consciousness
3. Check ABC(Airway Breathing Circulation)
4. Remove Jewelry
5. Don’t Pop Bleb
6. Beware of refreezing
7. Call Emergency Hotline
Procedure how to treat 2nd Degree Frostbite
1. Scene Safety (Bring to a safe place)
2. Level of Consciousness
3. Check ABC(Airway Breathing Circulation)
4. Remove Jewelry
5. Do not rewarm the affected body part in the
field
6. Protect Body Part
7. Watch for Hypothermia
8. Call Emergency Hotline
To avoid the dangers posed by extreme cold, keep the
following in mind:
• Avoid excessively cold and windy weather –
“Prevention is better than cure”. If you can avoid
performing physical activities in cold conditions, then
do so by all means.

• Dress appropriately – if you have no choice but

engage in physical activity in cold conditions, then
wear several layers of lightweight clothing.
• Watch your time – If possible, limit the time of
your physical activity. Shorten your routing or
perform fewer sets or repetitions so you will not
be exposed to the cold for too long.

• Stop if you feel anything out of the ordinary – if

you feel any of the symptoms of hyperthermia or
frostbite, stop whether you are doing and go to a
warmer place to get some rest. If necessary, seek
medical help.
