NUMBER SYSTEMS
Natural Numbers – The numbers starting from 1,
2, 3, … are called as Natural Numbers.
Whole Numbers- The collection of Natural
Numbers along with the number 0 i.e. 0, 1, 2, 3…
are called as Whole Numbers.
Integers – The collection of Whole Numbers
along with their negatives form the collection of
Integers i.e. …-3,-2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3 …
Rational Numbers The numbers which can be
written in form, where p and q are integers and
q≠0 are called as Rational Numbers. For example
– , , 4, 0
ADD/SUBTRACT RATIONAL NUMBERS
Case I – Same Denominator Case II – Different Denominators
Example 1: Example 3:
Step 1 – Take LCM of denominators, LCM(5,6) = 30

Example 2:

Example 4:
LCM(8,4) = 8
Revision Practice
1. Give four rational numbers equivalent to
2. Which is greater between and
3. Write the following rational numbers in ascending order:
4. Solve:
(a) (b)
(c) (d)
(e) (f)
(g)
PROPERTIES OF NUMBERS
PROPERTIES OF RATIONAL
NUMBERS – CLOSURE PROPERTY
Operation Numbers Remarks
Addition and is a rational number. Rational Numbers are closed
under addition.

Subtraction and is a rational number. Rational Numbers are closed

under Subtraction.

Multiplication and is a rational number. Rational Numbers are closed

under Multiplication.

Division and 2 is a rational number Rational Numbers are not closed

But under division.
is not defined.
PROPERTIES OF RATIONAL
NUMBERS – COMMUTATIVE
PROPERTY
Operation Numbers Remarks
Addition and Addition is commutative.

Subtraction and Subtraction is not commutative.

Multiplication and Multiplication is commutative.

Division and Division is not commutative.

PROPERTIES OF RATIONAL
NUMBERS – ASSOCIATIVE
PROPERTY
Operation Numbers Remarks
Addition Addition is Associative
So, =

Subtraction Subtraction is not associative

So,

Multiplication = Multiplication is Associative

Division Division is not Associative

EXAMPLES – Solve using properties

PROPERTIES OF RATIONAL
NUMBERS – IDENTITY PROPERTY
ROLE OF ZERO ROLE OF ONE
Zero is called the additive identity for the One is called the multiplicative identity for
addition of rational numbers. It is the additive rational numbers. It is the multiplicative
identity for integers and whole numbers as identity for integers and whole numbers as
well. well.
Example Example

On adding 0 to any rational number, we get On multiplying 1 with any rational number, we
the number itself. get the number itself.
PROPERTIES OF RATIONAL
NUMBERS – INVERSE PROPERTY
ADDITIVE INVERSE MULTIPLICATIVE INVERSE
For a rational number 𝑎/𝑏, we have If
. then we say that is called the reciprocal or
multiplicative inverse of .
Thus, is the additive inverse of and is the
additive inverse of . Example

PROPERTIES OF RATIONAL
NUMBERS – DISTRIBUTIVE
PROPERTY
For all rational numbers a, b and c,

For Example:

Thus, =
