THE ORDER OF NATIONAL ARTISTS

Highest national honor and recognition conferred to a selected


artist who has contributed much to the development and
promotion of Philippine Arts

whether in fields of Music, Dance, Theater, Visual Arts,


Literature, Film and Broadcast Arts, Architecture or Allied Arts.
'NATIONAL ARTIST'

This is distinguished Filipino artists who have made significant


contributions to the cultural heritage of the country
ORDER OF NATIONAL ARTIST

also known as Orden ng mga Pambansang Alagad ng Sining


Presidential Proclamation No. 1001 dated April 27, 1972
to give appropriate recognition and prestige to Filipinos who
have distinguished themselves and made outstanding
contributions to Philippine arts ad letters.
The award is given during a ceremony at Malacanang
Palace and awarded by the Philippine President.

The proclaimed National Artists are awarded a Grand


Collar as a symbol of their title
THE ORDER OF NATIONAL ARTISTS AIMS TO
RECOGNIZE THE FOLLOWING:

Filipino artists who have made significant contributions to the cultural


heritage of the country.
Filipino artistic accomplishment at its highest level and to promote
creative expression
 Filipino artists who have dedicated their lives to their works to
forge new paths and directions for future generations of Filipino artists.

living awardees)

• State funeral benefit not exceeding P500,000
CRITERIA:

Natural-born citizens

Have contributed in building Filipino sense of nationhood.

Have created a substantial and significant body of works and


displayed excellence in the practice of their art form.

• “The Grand Old Man of
Philippine Art”
• First National Artist
• He developed the backlighting
technique which became his
trademark.

• He was a fictionist, essayist, poet,

Doctor of Humane Letters, honoris causa, its highest
academic recognition “For his creative genius in shaping the
Philippine short story and novel, and making a new clearing
within English idiom and tradition on which he established
