 School
health programes is an important aspect of
community health.
 Itis the possible to increase the level of health of
the community and achieve growth in the health
of future generation through school health service.
 Definition
 School health refers to the state of complete physical, mental,
social and spiritual well being and not merely the absence of
disease or infirmity among pupils, teachers and other school
personals.
 School health service is defined:
 School health service refers to need based comprehensive service
rendered to the pupils, teachers and other personals in the school to
promote and protect their health, prevent and control disease and
maintain their health.
 Ultimately aims of school health programmes
is to promote, protect and maintain health of
the school children and reduce morbidity and
mortality in them.
Objectives of school health programmes
• To promotion of positive health

• Prevention of the diseases
• Early diagnosis, treatment and follow up of the defects
• Awakening the health consciousness of the children
• Provision of healthful environment.
Goals of school health programmes
 Toprepare younger generation to adapt measures to

remain health so as to help them to make best use of
educational facilities, to utilize the leisure in productive
and constructive manner, to enjoy recreation and to
develop concerns for others.
 Tohelp the younger generation to become health and
useful citizen who will be able to perform their role
effectively for the welfare of themselves, their families
and community at large and country as whole.

rashes, spots, signs of acute cold, coughing, sneezing, sore throat,
rigid neck, nausea, vomiting, watery eyes headache, chills, fever etc
Remedial measure and follow up
 Following regular examination, respective referral service.

 Special clinics should e conducted in the health unit.
 Referral hospital must be provide bed for children who are admitted and provide relevant treatments.
Preventive of communicable disease
 Protection of all school going children for communicable disease

by immunization according national immunization schedule.
Healthful school environment
• An optimal school environment location, building and
equipment are important pre-requisites for school health.
• Good school environment promote physical, emotional and
social health of the pupils.
• School should serve as exemplary place to reflect sanitation.
Nutritional service
 Good nutrition is very essential not only for optimal health growth
and development of school child but also for their educational
achievements.
First Aid and emergence care
 School must be have arrangement of first aid and emergence care to
children who get injured or sick at the school.
 The teachers should receive adequate training during teacher training
program or in service training program to prepare them selves to
carry out this obligation.
Mental health &Dental health
Mental health
 Mental health of children affect their physical health and learning process.
 Juvenile delinquent, mal adjustment and drug addiction are becoming problem
among school children. So teacher need to plan and organize well balanced
curriculum activities so that students are not over burdened and sufficient relaxation
and recreation.
Dental health
 School children often suffer dental disease and defects.
 School health should incorporate dental health component.
 Dental health and denturist should be employed
 During dental check up should focus on prophylaxis cleaning and dental hygiene
classes
Eye health
 Teachers are in key positive to detect the reflective errors,

refer for treatment for squints, ambliyopia and to detect
eye infection.
 Vit A administration should be done
Health education
 Health education is very important for school children

as it creates awareness, give knowledge regarding
health matters, develop motivation and promote
change in health behavours and health attitude.
 Health education content include personal hygiene,
environmental health, nutrition, prevention and control
of communicable and none communicable diseases.
Educated of handicapped children
 Every child irrespectively of the disability should be

encouraged to became productive and self supporting.

 The school have cumulative records providing pertinent
information and serve as tool to evaluate school health
services.
Nature and scope of school health
 Itis an integral part of community health. It is

community health and family health that promote well
being of children and their education for health living.
 Itcan be powerful influence for shaping of health
behaviors. There is unique opportunity to promote ,
maintain and protect health and well being were
attitude and values most readily developed.
Nature and scope of school health
 School health service is personal health service and it stress

the role of children as a “change agency of the community”.
Child has greater capacity to observe, learn experiment and
then transfer knowledge for others.
 School health help to impart the information of health
habits and practice of healthful living school live, which are
very important during the formative period of one`s live.
Medical inspection
 Regular periodical appraisal of health of school children is necessary to

identify the deviation from the normal body parts and system. It requires
complete physical and mental check up.
 Initial medical inspection should be done at the time of entry which include
history taking, physical and medical examination.
 Physical examination includes observation of the child from head to toe,
measurement of height, weight, arm and chest circumferences.
 Testing of vision, hearing and speech, observation of vital signs.
 Routinely examination of blood urine and stool should be carry out.
 Screening of tuberculosis should be done.
 Minimum of three health check up should be carry out.
Immunization
 Immunization of the children specific against

communicable disease is necessary to prevent occurrence
of the disease like tuberculosis, diphtheria, tetanus,
measles and polio.
 Proper records of immunization should maintained which
could be handed over the time of leaving schools.
