Intoduction to SAARC

 The Regional Inter-governmental organization of South Asian countries.


 Established in 1985(December 8th), Dhaka(Banglaesh)
 Headquaters in Khatmandu, Nepal.
Members:
 Sirilanka
 Bhutan
 India
 Bangladesh
 Nepal
 Maldives
 Pakistan
 Afghanistan ( bloc of 2007 under the rule of President
Hamid Karzai)
Achievements

 The SAARC Satellite for South Asia.

 1st Secretary General of SAARC (Abdul Ahsan)

 Current Secretary General of SAARC (Weerakoon)


SAARC Summit

 Held in the dates of 1985 December at the palace of Dhaka.

 Latest(18th) SAARC Summit Khatmandu from November 26 to 27, 2014.

 No Summit after 2014.


Objectives of SAARC

 To promote the Welfare of people of South Asia and to improve their quality of life.

 To accelerate economic growth, social progress and cultural development in the region
and to provide all individuals the opportunity to live in dignity and to realize their full
potential.

 To promote collective self reliance among the countries of South Asia.

 To contribute to mutual trust, understanding and appreciation of another problems.

 To promote active collaboration and mutual assistance in the economic, social, cultural,
technical sand scientific fields.
Objectives of SAARC
 Coordination with other countries.

 To strengthen cooperation among themselves in international


forums on matters of common interest.

 To cooperate with international and regional organization


with similar aims and purpose.
Common Solution
 Countries have common problems and issues like poverty
disasters etc can be overcome by vreating common areas of
development and progress having common solution.

 SAARC focuses on enhancing regional economic integration by

facilitating trade and commerce among member countries, promoting

SAARC Observers:
 Inclusive Engagement: SAARC engages with observer nations and international

organizations, promoting dialogue and collaboration beyond the region for shared interests

and global cooperation.

 Strategic Partnerships: The organization welcomes observers to participate in

discussions, contributing diverse perspectives and expertise, strengthening diplomatic ties

and fostering a broader understanding of regional issues.


Cultural Exchange:
 Cultural Diversity: SAARC encourages cultural exchange programs that showcase
the rich and diverse heritage of member countries, fostering mutual understanding and
appreciation among the people of South Asia.
Challenges Faced by SAARC
 Differing Priorities: Member countries sometimes have divergent priorities, making
it challenging to align on common objectives within SAARC. Varied national
interests may slow down the decision-making process, impacting the organization's
overall effectiveness.

 Communication Barriers: Language and communication differences among


member nations can create challenges in conveying ideas and reaching mutual
understandings.Overcoming these barriers is essential for fostering effective
collaboration and coordination within the SAARC framework.
Future Prospects :
 Enhanced Economic Integration: The future holds the potential for SAARC to deepen economic

integration among member nations, fostering increased trade, investments, and collaborative

economic policies for shared prosperity.

 Coordinated Regional Development: SAARC aims to play a votal role in addressing common

challenges and opportunities, working towards coordinated regional development initiatives that

promote sustainability, innovation, and inclusive growth.


Conclusion

 Despite challenges, SAARC remains a platform for South Asian nations to

collaborate on shared goals.

 The organization's continued efforts are vital for fostering regional

development and cooperation.
