Have you imagined a man born as an

adult already? Fortunately, humans

are born as infants and slowly go
through stages before adulthood.
We undergo stages called the
life cycle. A life cycle is the
developmental stages that occur
during an organism’s lifetime. A
life cycle ends when an organism
dies.
Developmental stages occur at
different timing because of
physiological factors and
experiences
Some individual’s transition period
occurs faster than others.
In human development, we have
mainly 6 stages. We have the fetus,
baby or infant, childhood,
adolescence, adulthood, and old
person. Let’s talk about it in detail.
The first stage in the human life cycle
is the fetus. It depends on its mother as
it cannot breathe, drink, or eat by
itself. The mother will carry this fetus
inside her womb for nine months.
After nine months, the baby is
delivered by its mother to the world.
Babies from birth to 1 year are also
known as infants. In this stage, the
infant is completely dependent upon
its parents to survive.
The next stage is the childhood. Children in
this stage can be divided into; toddlers (1-3
years), preschoolers (3-5 years), and
primary school children (5-12 years). The
child in this stage learns how to walk, talk,
and be more self-sufficient. In this period,
the child learns new habits and behavior.
Next to childhood is the adolescent period. It
takes place starting from 13 years up to 19
years of age. Puberty usually takes place in the
child’s teenage years; therefore, adolescents
are also called teenagers. During puberty rapid
growth and changes of the body take place.
These include changes in body shape, and
growing hair on some parts of the body, for
example, boys grow hair on their faces, and
boys’ voices become deepen and rough.
Next to adolescence is the adulthood
stage. People aged 20 years to 65 years
old are called adults. They are fully
grown and can provide for themselves.
Adults can be divided into; young adults
(20–36 years), middle-aged adults (36
– 55 years), and older adults (55 – 65
years).
When the person reaches 65 years of age,
he is considered an elderly person. The
average life expectancy of a person can
vary from 70 to 85 years. But it depends on
the health of each person, as some die
before 70 years, whereas some die after 85
years. However, the human life cycle ends
at this stage.
On the other hand, the life cycle of an animal
such as an insect is considered a complete
metamorphosis if they undergo four stages
such as eggs, larva, pupa, and adult. Here is an
example.
The butterfly develops through
metamorphosis. Metamorphosis is a
Greek word that means
transformation or change in shape.
Eggs are laid on plants by the adult
butterfly.
These eggs became larvae also called
caterpillars.

The caterpillar’s job is to eat all the time

until it grows and splits its skin
The food eaten will be stored and used as an
adult.
When the caterpillar grows and stops eating, it will
turn into pupa or chrysalis.

It will be suspended under a branch, hidden in eaves

or buried underground. The pupa is protected inside a
cocoon of silk. This stage will last a few weeks, a
month or even longer. Then, it will turn to an adult
stage. Most adult butterfly live only one or two weeks.
Like butterflies, frogs have also four stages that go
through. First, they begin as a fertilized egg. A female
frog lays a lot of eggs at one time in a pond. The eggs
float on water in a jelly mass or cluster. The eggs will
soon hatch into tadpoles!
When the tadpole hatches, it looks more like a fish
than a frog. It doesn’t have any legs! It has gills that
allow it to breathe underwater. Tadpole swims, eats
plants and algae helping regulate blooms and reducing
the chances of algal contamination.
The tadpole will grow and turn into a young frog or
froglet. It has a tail as food, so until its tail is
completely gone, it doesn’t need anything else to eat!
Eventually, the tail of the froglet will disappear. The
young frog will grow for about 2-4 years to become
an adult. The adult frogs then lay their eggs and more
tadpoles hatch and begin the cycle again

toxins. These traits make
Frogs need suitable land and freshwater habitats to
survive. They also have highly permeable skin that
can easily absorb bacteria, chemicals, and other
toxins. These traits make them susceptible to changes
in the environment and are great indicators of their
environment's health.
However, some insects go through three stages only.
One example is the cockroach.
The cockroach life cycle begins with an egg.
The egg looks like small and leathery
capsules. It took one to two months to
hatch the egg of a cockroach. The next
stage is the nymphal stage where it
undergoes several molts growing a little
each time it sheds its skin. The final molt is
the adult stage and reproduces to repeat
the cycle.
Activity 1: Direction: Number the correct order in
the stages of the human life cycle as represented by
the pictures. Write numbers 1-6 in the space
provided.
Activity 2: Direction: Match the
picture to the correct butterfly life
cycle stage. Write the letter of the
correct answer in your notebook.
A. egg
1.
2. B.hatching

3. C. adult butterfly

4. D. pupa/chrysalis

5. E. larva/caterpillar
Direction: Write TRUE if the statement is true about the
life cycle of a cockroach and FALSE if the statement is not.

1. The cockroach goes through 6 stages of

its life cycle.
2. The egg of a cockroach looks like small
and leathery capsules.
3. The nymphal stage of a cockroach is
where it undergoes several molts growing a
little each time it sheds their skin.
4. The final molt of a cockroach is the adult
stage and reproduces to start the cycle
over again.
5. The cockroach also undergoes pupa
stage.
Direction: Choose the letter of the correct answer.
