EQUATIONS AND
INEQUALITIES
ABSOLUTE VALUE EQUATIONS

Previously, we learned that the absolute value of a

number x (denoted by |x|) is the distance of the number
from zero on the number line.
 The absolute value of zero is zero.
 The absolute value of a positive number is itself.
 The absolute value of a negative number is its opposite or
positive counterpart.
ABSOLUTE VALUE EQUATIONS

Examples are:
1. |0| = 0
2. |4| = 4
3. |–12| = 12
4. |7 – 2| = 5
5. |2 – 7| = 5
ABSOLUTE VALUE EQUATIONS

How about the absolute value of the following?

1) |a| = 11
2) |m| = 28
3) |r| =
4) |y| + 1 = 3
5) |p| - 1 = 7
TRY THIS:

1) |m| = 10
2) |x| + 2 = 6
3) |r| - 4 = 7
STEPS IN SOLVING ABSOLUTE VALUE EQUATIONS

 Step 1: Let the expression on one side of the equation consist only
of a single absolute value expression.
 Step 2: Is the number on the other side of the equation negative? If
it is, then the equation has no solution. If it is not, then proceed to
step 3.
 Step 3: If the absolute value of an expression is equal to a positive
number, say a, then the expression inside the absolute value can
either be a or –a Equate the expression inside the absolute value sign
to a and to –a, and solve both equations.
SOLVING ABSOLUTE VALUE EQUATIONS

EXAMPLE 1:
Solve |3a – 4| – 11 = 15
SOLVING ABSOLUTE VALUE EQUATIONS

EXAMPLE 2:
Solve |5x + 4| + 12 = 4.
TRY THIS:

1) |2x + 1| = 7
2) |5x + 1| - 2 = 9
SOLVING ABSOLUTE VALUE EQUATIONS

EXAMPLE 3:
Solve |c – 7| = |2c – 2|.
TRY THIS:

1.|2n – 9| = |n + 6 |
SOLVING ABSOLUTE VALUE EQUATIONS

EXAMPLE 4:
Solve |b + 2| = |b – 3|
SOLVING ABSOLUTE VALUE EQUATIONS

EXAMPLE 5:
Solve |x – 4| = |4 – x|.
SOLVING ABSOLUTE VALUE EQUATIONS

Solve the following absolute value equations:

1. |m| – 3 = 37
2. |2v| – 4 = 28
3. |5z + 1| = 21
4. |4x + 2| – 3 = –7
5. |2n – 6| = |n + 3 |
ABSOLUTE VALUE INEQUALITIES

Property I: Absolute Value Inequalities

If x represents an algebraic expression and k is a positive real
number, then |x| < k implies -k < X < k
ABSOLUTE VALUE INEQUALITIES

Property II: Absolute Value Inequalities

If x represents an algebraic expression and k is a positive real
number,
then |x| > k implies x < -k < or x > k

INEQUALITIES
Example 3:
Solve |3x – 7| – 4 > 10
SOLVING ABSOLUTE VALUE
INEQUALITIES
SOLVE:
