WHAT IS CONFLICT?
• A conflict in literature is defined as the struggle between
the characters or two opposite forces in a story; it is the
problem or challenge that the protagonist must face
which drives each and every story. Without it, the story
would have no sense of point or purpose. There needs to
be some challenges in order for the reader to involve
himself and pay attention to what might happen to those
who take part in the actions in the story.
Two main divisions of conflict in literature
Internal conflict which happens inside a character, usually
the protagonist or the main character. With internal conflicts,
the character could have a problem with things he must
have to decide on or with his own weakness or personality.
One Kind: Character vs self
External conflict which takes place outside the character.
External conflicts may arise due to other characters, acts of
natural phenomenon, or society in which the characters live.

Three main types, namely: character vs. character,

character vs. nature, and character vs. society.
EXTERNAL CONFLICT
Character vs. Character
- It occurs when one character has a problem with another
character in the story, or between a character and many
characters.
Examples
-Local wars in the Philippines between the soldiers and the
people who are against the government
-Policemen searching and arresting people who violate the law
EXTERNAL CONFLICT
Character vs. Nature
- This type of conflict pits a character against a natural force like
a storm, a predatory animal, or a contagious disease.
Examples
-The earthquake which devastated some areas of the Philippines and
typhoons which destroyed not just houses but also crops and
animals
-The CoViD-19 pandemic
-The infectious African Swine Fever
EXTERNAL CONFLICT
Character vs. Society
- This takes place when the character is having a struggle
with the society in which he lives in, including laws or the
beliefs of groups.
Examples
-People rallying to condemn certain laws Racial
discrimination
-People who migrate to another place and adapting peculiar
cultures
INTERNAL CONFLICT
Character vs. Self
- This kind of struggle happens in the character’s mind. We
can see the manifestation of this conflict on the outside, but
it takes deeper inquiry to know what is behind it.
Examples
-Decision making
-Feeling of guilt
-Identity crisis
-Depression/Feeling of sadness
