INTRODUCTION TO FIRST AID


MODULE OBJECTIVES

 Give the 3 objectives of First Aid;


 Give the roles of a first aider;
 Enumerate the 5 modes of transmission
of disease; and
 Define BSI.
What is First Aid?
FIRST AID
First aid is an assistance given to any
person suffering a sudden illness or
injury with care.

Is an assessment and intervention that


can be performed by a bystander (or by
the patient/victim) with minimal or no
medical equipment. (The National First
Aid Science Advisory Board, USA).
LEGAL BASIS
• According to the Article 12 no.4 of Act
No.3815 of the Philippine Revised Penal
Code Book One:
• “any person who, while performing a
lawful act with due care, causes an injury
by mere accident without fault or
intention of causing it” is exempted from
criminal liability.
Article 275 no. 1 & 2 of Act No. 3815 of the
Philippine Revised Penal Code Book Two:

“Abandonment of person in
danger and abandonment of
one’s own victim”.
Article 275 no. 1 & 2 of Act No. 3815 of the
Philippine Revised Penal Code Book Two:

1. Anyone who shall fail to render assistance to


any person, whom he shall find in an
uninhabited place wounded, or in danger of
dying, when he can render such assistance
without detriment to himself, shall constitute
a more serious offense.
2. Anyone who shall fail to help or render
assistance to another whom he has
accidentally wounded or injured.
OBJECTIVES OF FIRST AID

To preserve life,

To prevent the condition from


worsening, and

To relieve pain or suffering.


ROLES OF A FIRST AIDER
Assess the situation quickly and
calmly;
Protect yourself, the victim, and
bystanders from any danger;
Provide immediate life saving care;
Summon advance medical care as
needed; and
Comfort the victim/s;
CHARACTERISTICS OF A
GOOD FIRST AIDER
1) Quick in Action - First aiders are required
to face a variety of emergency situations and
this call for immediate action.
2) Calm - Ideal first aiders don't panic in
emergency situations.
3) Gentle - should not cause harm or pain.
4) Resourceful - having the ability to find ways of
dealing with problems like lack of first aid materials.
CHARACTERISTICS OF A
GOOD FIRST AIDER
5) Good Communication Skills - it is important
that these suffering people be talked to in order to
make the right assessment.
6) Comforting - introduce yourself to them to help
gain their trust. Explain what’s happening and why and
say what you’re going to do before you do it.
7) Passionate - willingness to help others who are
in need.
8) Empathetic - showing an ability to understand
other people’s emotions.
HINDRANCES IN GIVING FIRST AID

1. Unfavorable surroundings,

2. Presence of crowd,

3. Pressure from patient and

relatives.
Transmission of Diseases
Some infectious diseases can be passed from person
to person. Some are transmitted by insects or other
animals. And you may get others by touching
contaminated materials or being exposed to
organisms in the environment.

Tuberculosis

SARS
The most common hazard
faced by rescuers is the threat
of communicable diseases.
Rescuers follow standard
practices and use Personal
Protective Equipment (PPE)
when providing care to victims.
These practices are commonly
referred to as Body Substance Isolation
Precaution or BSI.

BSI or Body Substance Isolation are


precautions taken to isolate or prevent
risk of exposure from any other types of
bodily substance.
Basic Precautions and Practices
1. Personal Protective Equipment.
2. Personal Hygiene.

3. Equipment cleaning and disinfecting.
