Exploring career opportunities

• Career opportunities requires you to research


prospect in you major that correspond with
your goals and priorities.
• As you narrow down career opportunities, it is
important to develop a clear understanding of
what each career entails.
• When you find a career that seems
interesting, you need to do some
investigating.

• Interview several people in that line of work


and find out what the job involves.
• Ask questions that will help you determine if
this career lines up with your goals and
priorities.
• The more you know about a given occupation,
the more effectively you will be able to
describe how your skills line up with the
position.
Goals and career challenges

• People have different views on what they believe is and is


not attainable in terms of achieving goals.
• Career goals should also take account of individual
circumstances such as pay or organizational grade, level of
experience in current post, and working arrangements.
• Goals should be developed that assist you in resolving
immediate career challenge.
• Work to understand the techniques and strategies that you
can use to help you achieved your goal.
• Understand that as you explore your interest, skills, and
abilities your goals may change.

Exploring
The exploring stage begins with you, the job seeker.
During this stage, you will need to explore both yourself and
potential careers.
Researching
 The researching stage of the job-seeking process comprise two
components: researching openings and researching potential
employers.
Applying
Once you have researched a place you would like to consider for
employment, it’s time to turn your attention to resumes and cover
letters.

Interviewing
As you prepare for the interview, you already have a clear
sense of who your audience is and what they are looking for in
candidate.
Following up
When the interview ends, be certain to thank your interviewer
verbally.
If you have been communicating with the interviewer via e-
mail, then you can send the thank you message through e-mail.
Negotiating
A negotiation is a discussion between two or more parties to
reach an agreement that concludes some matter.

• Preparing your resume
Make the visual appearance of the resume neat
and orderly.
Organize data carefully.
Be sure that everything on your resume is
accurate.
Always ask permission of persons you wish to use
as references.

Prepare an attractive, accurate resume.
Learn as much as you can about the company or
institution where you are applying.
Get clear directions for getting to the site of the
interview and, if possible, learn the name of the
person with whom you will interview.

Plan what you will wear to be appropriately and
professionally dressed.
Decide what your best qualities are and how you will sell
yourself.
Plan questions to ask about the company or institution that
you are interviewing.

Groom yourself carefully; give special attention to haircuts,
hair styles, and facial hair.
Choose clothing that represents the profession you wish to
enter.

Never smoke or chew gum in an interview.
Walk and sit with good posture.
Shake hands with firm grip.
Look at the interviewer with eye-to-eye contact.
Answer questions honestly.
Be positive and enthusiastic.

• Speak clearly and distinctly.
• Never criticize former teachers or employers.
• Be prepared to describe some positive features of
the institution where you received your education.
• Be prepared to tell why you want this job and
what you can do for the organization if you are
employed.

the interviewer.
Career projection and advancement

• An individual can advance by moving from and entry


level job to a management position within the same
field, for instance, from one occupation to another.
• Climbing the corporate ladder within the same
occupation may be the result of gaining experience
and possible completing additional training.
• When one advances by changing careers, that person
may transition to a related profession that has greater
educational requirements and responsibilities.

• When exploring an occupation you are considering,


learn about the advancement opportunities that
will be available after gaining experience.
• If you crave new challenges and increasing
responsibilities, a career that lacks growth
opportunities will become dull over time.
• When reading a description of an occupation, look
for information about advancement opportunities.

• How to advance at work.


 Ask your boss for more challenging projects that will
demonstrate your willingness to take on more responsibility
and give you a chance to prove your ability to handle it.
 Regularly check internal job listings for higher level positions
and apply to those for which you are qualified.
 Offer to help colleagues, including your boss, with complicated
projects.
 Ask someone with more experience, for example your mentor
for advice about career advancement.
 Find out what additional training and certifications can help
you advance in your career and then pursue them if possible.
