MENTAL HEALTH IS THE WELL BEING OF A

PERSON’S MINDSET.
MENTAL HEALTH INCLUDES OUR
EMOTIONAL, PSYCHOLOGICAL, AND SOCIAL
WELL-BEING. IT AFFECTS HOW WE THINK,
FEEL, AND ACT. IT ALSO HELPS DETERMINE
HOW WE HANDLE STRESS, RELATE TO
OTHERS, AND MAKE CHOICES. MENTAL
HEALTH IS IMPORTANT AT EVERY STAGE OF
LIFE, FROM CHILDHOOD AND
ADOLESCENCE THROUGH ADULTHOOD.

• PHYSICAL HEALTH AND MENTAL HEALTH ARE

CLOSELY ASSOCIATED AND IT IS PROVED
BEYOND DOUBT THAT DEPRESSION LEADS TO
HEART AND VASCULAR DISEASES
• Mental disorders also affect personal health behaviour
like eating sensibly, regular exercise, adequate sleep,
adhering to medical therapies thus increasing the risk
of physical illness.
• Mental ill-health also leads to social problems like
unemployment, broken families, poverty, drug abuse
and related crime.
• Poor mental health plays a significant role in
diminished immune functioning.
• Medically ill patients with depression have a worse
outcome than those without.
• Chronic illnesses like diabetes, cancer, heart disease
increase the risk of depression

OUR MENTAL HEALTH

ENCOMPASSES OUR
PSYCHOLOGICAL,
EMOTIONAL AND SOCIAL
WELL-BEING. THIS
MEANS IT IMPACTS HOW
WE FEEL, THINK AND
BEHAVE EACH DAY.
THEREFORE,
TAKE CARE OF YOUR
MENTAL HEALTH

AS THE CORONAVIRUS PANDEMIC RAPIDLY

SWEEPS ACROSS THE WORLD, IT IS
INCLUDING A CONSIDERABLE DEGREE OF
FEAR, WORRY, ANXIETY AND CONCERN IN
THE POPULATION AT LARGE, AND AMONG
CERTAIN GROUPS IN PARTICULAR, SUCH AS
OLDER ADULTS, CARE PROVIDERS AND
PEOPLE WITH UNDERLYING HEALTH
CONDITIONS.

10

IN PUBLIC MENTAL HEALTH TERMS, THE

MAIN PSYCHOLOGICAL IMPACT TO DATE IS
ELEVATED RATES OF STRESS OR ANXIETY,
BUT AS NEW MEASURES AND IMPACTS ARE
INTRODUCED, ESPECIALLY QUARANTINE
AND ITS EFFECTS ON MANY PEOPLE'S USUAL
ACTIVITIES AND CHORES, ROUTINES OR
LIVELIHOOD - LEVELS OF LONELINESS,
DEPRESSION, HARMFUL ALCOHOL AND
DRUG ABUSE, AND SELF-HARM AND
SUICIDAL BEHAVIOUR HAVE ALSO
SKYROCKETED.

OLDER ADULTS AND YOUNG CHILDREN HAVE

BEEN CONSTANTLY LINKED TO FEAR PSYCHOSIS
AND ANTICIPATORY ANXIETY REGARDING THEIR
UNFORESEEN FUTURE. THE PANDEMIC HAS HAD
A DETRIMENTAL AND AN EXACERBATING EFFECT
ON OUR MENTAL HEALTH AND INDIRECTLY ON
YOUR PHYSICAL BEING AS MENTAL HEALTH
CLICKS ALONG WITH PHYSICAL WELL BEING.
PEOPLE ARE IN A STATE OF TREPIDATION AS
THEY ARE IN ASUNDERNESS FROM THEIR NEAR
AND DEAR ONES.
Infact, the very term social distancing is an oxymoron in
itself that we must live up to.
However, we must not be caught in the epiphany of the
moment. It is much easier said than done, but we are to
realise that everybody at this point of their lives are going
through something same, and no different.

12

EVEN THOUGH THE EFFECTS OF THE

PANDEMIC HAVE BEEN
AGATHOKAKOLOGICAL, HAVING POSITIVE
STRIDENT IMPACTS ON NATURE AND WILD
LIFE, IT HAS MADE US APPREHENSIVE OF
WHAT HAPPENS OR CAN HAPPEN THE NEXT
MOMENT. BESIDES THIS, PEOPLE ARE NOW
ALSO BORED OF THE NEW NORMAL
ROUTINE THEY HAVE TO FOLLOW.
HOWEVER, IF NOT FOR THE PANDEMIC, WE
WOULD HAVE NOT COME TO THE
REALISATION OF WHAT IT TAKES TO BE
WITH OUR LOVED ONES AND ALL THAT
REMAINS IS BEING THANKFUL AND
SOCIAL JUSTICE CLUB ST EDMUNDS
GRATEFUL FOR ALL THAT WE HAVE!

THERE ARE MANY DIFFERENT METAL

ILLNESSES SUCH AS DEPRESSION AND
ANXIETY, COMMON AMONG SCHOOL
STUDENTS. BUT THERE ARE DIFFERENT
WAYS TO COPE WITH THESE ILLNESSES.

15

SOME HEALTHY COPING STRATEGIES ARE:

• Take breaks from social media. There can be a lot of
negativity online so taking a break is a good coping
mechanism.
• Taking care of yourself. Eat healthy, exercise, get
plenty of sleep, and give yourself a break if you feel
stressed out.
• Make time to unwind. Try to do some other activities
you enjoy.
• Talk to others. Share your problems and how you are
feeling and coping with a parent, friend, counselor,
trusted ones etc.
• Find a hobby. Pick up an instrument, learn a new
sport, cook, bake. Etc
• Learn your triggers, triggers are the things that tick or
cause your depression and anxiety. If you know what
triggers your depression and anxiety, you can stay
away from those such.

16

THE UN-HEALTHY COPING STRATEGIES ARE:

• Consumption of intoxicants such as drugs, alcohol,
cigarettes etc.
• Over and under eating.
• Sleeping too late at night.
• Not making an effort to do homework and other
activities.
• Not trying to socialize with others.
• Skipping classes and school.
