    OBJECTIVES

    a. Describe how water and minerals are moved


    from the soil to the different parts of the
    plants.
    b. explain how food is distributed in plants.
    c. appreciate the importance of transport in
    plants.
    TWO CLASSIFICATIONS OF PLANTS

    A. NONVASCULAR
     those without vascular tissues (xylem and phloem)
    B. VASCULAR
     those with xylem and phloem
    XYLEM
     are vascular tissues that help transport water and minerals to all parts of
    the body.
    PHLOEM
     are tissues that help transport the products of photosynthesis to all
    parts of the plant.
    RADIAL RAYS

     found along the trunks of trees which are tissues that


    function in the radial distribution of food.
     these are very prominent in woody plants
    THREE DIFFERENT TRANSPORT
    PATHWAYS:
    A. Apoplast pathway
     includes movement of the cell walls and the spaces
    between cells.
    B. Symplast pathway
     water and minerals pass through a continuum of
    cytoplasm between cells which is called plasmodesma
    (plural plasmodesmata)
    C. Transmembrane Transport
     involves transport between cells across the
    membranes vacuoles within the cells.

    CASPARIAN STRIP
     blocked the passage in the cell walls.
    VEINS and VEINLETS

     found in the leaves of plants


     Composed mainly of xylem and phloem
     function: can be the same to the blood vessel in animals.
     serve in the transport of water and nutrients.
    XYLEM TRANSPORT

     it is the greatest distances travelled by water and minerals in


    plants.
    TRANSPIRATION
     Is the release of water vapor through openings in the leaves
    which causes pressure that pulls the water up.
    CAPILLARY ACTION
     allows the water to move up the plants through the cohesive
    forces between water molecules and adhesive forces between
    water molecules and the walls of the xylem vessels.
    OSMOSIS and DIFFUSION
     are also passive forces in plants that help molecules move from one cell to
    another.
    WATER POTENTIAL
     is the main factor that regulates the transport process in plants.
     Used to predict where water will move.
    HYDATHODES-it is a type of pore, commonly found in angiosperms ,
    that secretes water through pores in the epidermis or leaf margin.
    GUTTATION- is when water secreted from the tip of the leaves of plants.
    PHLOEM TRANSPORT
    TRANSLOCATION
     it is the transport of materials from the leaves to the other parts of the plants.
    TURGOR PRESSURE
     it is a pressure exerted by fluid in a cell that presses the cell membrane against the
    cell wall.
    PRESSURE FLOW THEORY
     states that dissolved carbohydrates will flow from a source ( where it is produced)
    to a sink ( a storage organ) where they are stored , or utilized.
    BULK FLOW
     Takes place in the sieve tubes without any need for additional energy.
    CAREER FOCUS

    PLANT PHYSIOLOGIST
     study the physical, chemical and biological functions of plants. They
    specialize in plant processes such as photosynthesis, respiration,
    transpiration and transport among others.
