Manila: A
Collection of
Verses
by Luis G. Dato
Manila Bay
Luis G. Dato
1906 –1985

I sit upon the white rocks by the bay,

Against whose hollows numberless, the waves
Will splash forevermore. The sunset laves
The deep with light. There rise far away
A mountain that has seemingly defied
Manila Bay
Luis G. Dato
1906 –1985
The very clouds unchanged. And near, portending
That all created things will have an ending,
These crumbled crags lie by the ocean side!
O time! what element escapes your slow
And causeless move? These rough, resisting rocks,
Which the wind startled wave incessant mocks,
Are not to it unyielding even now.
The day is done, for once it had a beaming,
And so must all, whatever may be seeming.
Theme
It revolves around the concepts of time,
impermanence, and the cyclical nature of life. The
speaker reflects on the eternal crashing of waves
against the rocks, the unchanging mountain, and
the crumbling crags by the ocean side, highlighting
the passage of time and the inevitability of change
and endings.
Message
The message of "Manila Bay" is a reflection on the
fragility of life, the unstoppable march of time, and the
beauty found in accepting the impermanence of all
things. It urges readers to to accept and embrace the
cyclical patterns of life, recognizing that all things must
come to an end at some point. The setting of Manila Bay
symbolizes the timeless beauty of nature, while also
highlighting the inevitability of change and
transformation.
The Swallow
Luis G. Dato
1906 –1985

Little lone swallow frequenting the skies in the

bleakness of oncoming rain,
Gloating on the view by the river reflected when
days of sun reappear,
You who can sing in the fulness of sorrow, and in
seasons of gladness usefully sing,
You who in mirth and melancholy alike find joy, joy
in you we find.
The Swallow
Luis G. Dato
1906 –1985

We who aspire to vistas beyond us and only

can lift our eyes,
We who live in transient gladness and
hovering gloom,
We of the earth who cannot fly with you.
The Swallow
Luis G. Dato
1906 –1985

What life is yours who pursue not pleasure and yet have
it,
You who know sorrow and by it be left unoppressed
You who in shadow arise, and in sunshine pensively
dream on the river,
Of gladness not taking nor little nor much,
Of sorrow the master more often than not,
The Swallow
Luis G. Dato
1906 –1985

Knowing the one and the other as passing, imperfect,

Passing as the clouds in the bleakness of oncoming rain,
Imperfect as the vista by the river reflected when days of
sun reappear.
Theme
The theme of the poem revolves around the
contrast between the simple, carefree life of
the swallow and the complexities of human
existence. The poem explores the idea of
finding joy and contentment in the midst of
life's fleeting moments, acknowledging the
impermanence of both happiness and sorrow
Message
It conveys the idea of embracing freedom and
embracing change, and it reminds us of the
change of life and also the importance of
cherishing moments and experiences as they
come and go. Also, the poem encourages
readers to appreciate the beauty of nature,
the freedom it offers, and the passing of life.
Among the Hills
Luis G. Dato
1906 –1985

I used to watch the sunrise glow

That set aflame the eastern skies,
My lips in songs did freely flow
As thoughts went fleeting with my sighs.
Among the Hills
Luis G. Dato
1906 –1985

I’ve lived through storms and smiles and

tears,
And seen familiar faces die,
Ah, these, my weary youthful years
Are fraught with shades of dreams gone by.
Among the Hills
Luis G. Dato
1906 –1985

And yet when once again I see

The glory of the purpling hills,
My dying heart revives to be
A spring of loves and lover’s thrills.
Among the Hills
Luis G. Dato
1906 –1985

My mind in youth did ever roam

Across the mountains and the dales,
And now my heart has found a home
Among the eastern hills and vales.
Theme
the ability to find peace and comfort in nature, especially
in the form of the hills and valleys. The natural beauty of
the hills provides the speaker with comfort, safety, and a
sense of community while providing a break from life's
problems and difficulties. The speaker of the poem
considers their past experiences and finds relief in the
timeless beauty of nature, touching on themes of
nostalgia, recollections, and the passing of time.
Message
about seeking comfort, peace and a place to call home in the hills
and valleys of nature. The speaker considers the passing of time,
youth memories, and the passing of time of existence, but in the
end, he finds comfort and refreshment in the peace and beauty of
the natural world. He can find relief from life's problems. The
healing force of nature in the hills, which stand in for a place of
safe haven. The poem expresses a great respect for the beauty
and serenity of the natural world, as well as feelings of nostalgia
and desire.
Bamboo Flute

SILENT TRAILS
by Marcelo de Gracia Concepcion
I used to Silent trails
Silent are the trails of Benguet hills,

When the mist veils the sun -

Even when the wind stirs the ferns

And the bamboo brakes sing
Their echoed murmurs.
SILENT TRAILS
by Marcelo de Gracia Concepcion

And the laden Benguet women pass;

Beating their pakkongs*
In cadenced monotones.

Even so,
These trails are lonely...
And deep are the ravines,
And higher still the skies.
SILENT TRAILS
by Marcelo de Gracia Concepcion

And yet when once again I see

The glory of the purpling hills,
My dying heart revives to be
A spring of loves and lover’s thrills.
SILENT TRAILS
by Marcelo de Gracia Concepcion

My mind in youth did ever roam

Across the mountains and the dales,
And now my heart has found a home
Among the eastern hills and vales.
Theme
It centers on the themes reflection, isolation, and a
search for self-awareness. The poem explores the deep
understanding and self-awareness that may be attained
through deep thought, which is frequently discovered in
quiet moments and among the calming qualities of
nature. It expresses the idea that one can dive deeply
into their thoughts and emotions and obtain clarity and
insight about the world and themselves by walking along
quiet routes.
Message
The book "Silent Trails" by Marcelo de Gracia
Concepcion promotes accepting isolation as a
means of achieving relaxation and self-discovery.
The poem serves as a reminder of the transforming
potential of isolation as well as the profound
realizations that can result from thoughtful
relection, which eventually lead to enlightenment
and personal development.
