METHODOLOGY
This section describes in sufficient detail the procedures employed
in the research so it can be evaluated and repeated if necessary.
Such description is important in evaluating the study.
The interpretation of the results of the study is taken in the light
of the methods employed. The validity and reliability of the
methods employed enable the reader to put more confidence on
the results of the study. Reproducibility of data is a primary
consideration in evaluating reliability of the technique. Validity of
the methods ensures that the data gathered are relevant, being
investigated and appropriate to the problem.
CONTENT
The methodology section informs the reader of the steps undertaken
by the researcher and how he did them. It includes the following:
a.All processes done during actual experimentation
b.All materials and amounts used in the study
c.Description of experimental and control setups
d.Kinds of data gathered
e.Number of trials and replicates done
f.Description of the samples and reference population
g.Management of sample plants and/or animals
h.Sampling technique
i.Identification and classification of variables
j.Chemical, physical and microbiological analyses of
samples
k.Manner of data collection, organization and processing
l.Statistical analysis
m.Limitation in the methods that have been discovered
during the study
ORGANIZATION, STYLE &
FORMAT
1. Headings and subheadings are meant to help the reader
through this section. They are labels, not sentences.
2. The headings and subheadings match those in the RESULTS
section to enable the reader to grasp quickly the relationship of a
specific method to the corresponding results.
3. The procedures in the METHODOLOGY are given in the order
that they were done during actual conduct of the experiment.
4. Materials used in the study like glassware, equipment and
chemicals are mentioned as the details of the procedure are given.
They are not enumerated or listed individually as in a laboratory
manual. Amounts of materials indicated are accompanied by
appropriate units of mesurements.
5. Standard analyses are not described in great detail. However,
modifications/improvements done in such routine analyses are
stated in detail. Choice of alternative methods of analysis is also
explained.
6. Photographs or flow diagrams are used to illustrate the samples,
equipment, working model of the designed apparatus and schematic
outline of the processes employed.
7. Abbreviations are never used on first citations. The same rule
applies to scientific names. They are spelled out completely on first
citation; however, abbreviations may be used in later citations. e.g.
Escherichia coli is abbreviated as E.coli
8. In the research report, the METHODOLOGY section is written in
the past tense (future tense for research proposal). The passive voice
is generally used. Personal pronouns are not used and instead the
researchers are alluded to use the third person.
Example: The materials will be acquired.
9. If the sentence starts with a number, the number is spelled out
Example: Ten mg of salt will be added.

(Incorrect: 10 mg of salt will be added.)
