Present Simple

‫المضارع البسيط‬
 We use the present simple to talk about facts, habits and everyday actions.

1) The sun rises every morning.


2) Pupils learn English at schools.  Facts

3) The boys play tennis every Tuesday.


4) I clean my room once a week.  Habits

5) Salma brushes her teeth everyday.


6) The women cook everyday.  Everyday actions
 Form:

Subject + verb1(v1) + … + time expression. (I , we , they , you)

1) The pupils study Arabic at school everyday.


2) I swim at the gym once a week.

Subject + verb + (s / es / ies) + ….+ time expression (he , she , it)

1) The girl reads a book every month.


2) He watches a movie every Friday.
3) The cat eats meat once a day.
 Spelling Rules (Third Person Singular – he, she, it )

1) We usually add s to the verb


Examples: read  reads talk talks play plays

2) When the verb ends in ss, ch, sh, x, o, we add es in the third person singular.
Examples: watch  watches go  goes fix fixes

3) When the verb ends in a consonant (‫)حرف ساكن‬+ y, we change the y to i and add es.

Time Expressions With Present Simple

The following time expressions are often used with the Present Simple. We usually put these
expressions at the beginning or end of a sentence.

Everyday, month, year… daily Examples: Sara buys new clothes


every year.
Each hour, day, week …. weekly Once a week, I
go to the restaurant.
Once a day, week, month, year… monthly
On Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday… yearly

The following time expressions are also used with present simple and come before the verb.
never , sometimes, often, usually, always
Examples:
I sometimes eat dinner at my grandmother’s house.
It never snows in Eilat
Negative
Practice – Negative (don’t/ doesn’t)

1) The pupils go to school everyday. 2) Dana cleans her room every Friday.
The pupils don’t go to school everyday. Dana doesn’t clean her room every Friday.

1) They (don’t/ doesn’t) sleep at night.


2) He (don’t/ doesn’t) like ice-cream.
3) My dog (don’t/ doesn’t) drink water.

4) Water ________( not, freeze) at 100 C. It _________ (boil) at 100 degrees.


5) We ___________ (not, speak) Spanish. We _________ (speak) Arabic.
6) Cats __________ (not, bark). Dogs __________ (bark).
7) The sun ________ (not rise) in the west. It _________ (set) in the west.
8) The teacher ________ (not teach) English. He _______ (teach) math.
 Yes/no question

To form Yes/No questions, we begin with do or does. The verb always remains in its base form.
Yes/No Questions
1) The boys play tennis on Tuesdays. 2) Sara cleans her room once a
week.
Do the boys play tennis on Tuesdays? Does Sara clean her room once a
week?
Yes, they do./ No, they don’t Yes, she does./ No, she
doesn’t

Wh - Questions
Who, what, when, where, why, which, how (question words)
To form Wh- questions in Present Simple, we usually put the question word before the Yes/No question.

Examples:
1) The woman cooks dinner in the kitchen everyday.
Y/N Question: Does the woman cook dinner in the kitchen everyday?
Wh – question: What does the woman cook in the kitchen everyday?
Where does the woman cook dinner everyday?
When does the woman cook dinner in the kitchen?
Subject Question? * Who cooks dinner in the kitchen everyday?

2) The pupils learn English at school every week.


Y/N Question:
Have/has
The verb have is an irregular (‫ )شاذ‬verb

I have He has
You have She has
We have It has
They have

1) My dog (have/has) a long tail 2) The woman (have/has) a nice dress.


3) I (have/has) a new car. 4) The girls (have/has) new clothes.
5) My sister and I (have/ has) a beautiful room.

Negation with have/has: 1) They have a new car.  __________________________________


2) She has very expensive clothes. 

Be: The verb be is an irregular verb.
