The Kalinagos (Caribs)

Appearance of the Kalinagos/(Caribs)

The Kalinagos were darked complexion with straight
black hair and they were taller, stronger and sturdy built.
As such, they were taller and stronger than the Tainos.
Apart from that the Kalinagos were more decorative than
the Tainos as they wore chains and pierced different
sections of their bodies.
The Social & Political Structure
Kalinagos/Caribs
Occupied the Lesser Antilles Guadeloupe, Martinique and Trinidad.
Kalinagos lived in villages near rivers or creeks, villages were always placed strategically
in preparation in attacks from other groups.
There was less hierarchical society among the Kalinagos than that of the Mayans and
Tainos.
The Kalinago chief was called OUBOUTOU.
The OUBOUTOU did not have as much power as HALCHU UINIC (Mayan) or
CACIQUE (Taino). They ruled by general consensus.
The OUBOUTOU was given full obedience during times of war which was necessary for
the effective fighting unit.
The position of OUBOUTOU was not hereditary but was attained by the head of the
largest family also for being brave.
The Social & Political Structure Kalinago/Carib

They lived in households containing extended families.

They practiced polygamy they had no ball courts.
Kalinagos (each extended family lived in a separate village. In times of peace, the village was head by
a TRUBUTULI HAUTHE (Village Headman).
During war each canoe would be captained by their owner, and one of those captains would be chosen
as UBOUTOU (he would keep the title for the rest of his life).
Kalinago men lived together in a KARBAY- a village meeting house where would they go under
warrior training.
In warrior training young Kalinago boys were taken from their mothers as young as 4 years old. They
were taken to live in KARBAY for training. They would undergo training in the manufacturing and
use of weapons, such as the bow and arrow (with the arrow being poison-tipped).
At age 14 or 15 they had to pass an initiation test to become warriors. They were tested in their pain
tolerance (salt was rubbed into wounds obtained from animal claws) and shooting accuracy with bow
and arrow.
Religious beliefs of the Kalinagos
They believed in an evil spirit called MAYBOYA. This spirit had to
be calmed in order to avoid harm.
Kalinago (Priest) were called BOYEZ. There function was to heal
the sick with herbs and to cast spells (known as PIAIA) which would
keep MAYBOYA away.
Young boys who did not lived in the KARBAY were to be trained as
warriors were left to grow up with women and trained as BOYEZ.
Ceremonies were carried out by BOYEZ were accompanied with
sacrifices and involved the use of tobacco.
They were Polytheistic worshiping many Gods.

as a result they developed tools and weaponry that were adapted for enhanced
hunting (as well as warfare).
For cuisine they seasoned their foods with pepper but no salt. They developed
pepper sauces such as COUII and TAUMALIN.
They also made a beer called OUICOU (a cassava beer with strong alcohol
content).
They built very strong canoes (two kinds- COUILANAS which were 20 feet
long and pointed at both ends).
