WHY HYPERTEXT
• In a hypertext system, the reader is free to navigate information
by exploring the connections provided.
• It is a very different way of presenting information than the
usual linear form.
• Text no longer flows in a straight line through a book. Instead, it
is broken down into many smaller units
• It acts as a bridge between two basic, opposite, and
complementing elements that may be called gender of
knowledge representation: free and shortcut.

The idea of intertextuality was first introduced by
Swiss linguist Ferdinand de Saussure (1857-1913), who
is credited with theories of language as a structured system
or relationship between the sign (word), the signified
(thought), and the signifier (sound).
Intertextuality is a word coined in the late 1960s
by philosopher Julia Kristeva to describe the
phenomenon of a continual exchange and relationship
building between texts.

ACTIVITY:
Imagine yourself as a writer. Write a one-paragraph
story (three-four sentences) using intertext as the mode of
text development. Include a reference such as a word,
phrase, concept, quotation of another work in your text.

EXAMPLE:
One day, Maria was asked by her mom to cook rice.
She immediately followed her but unfortunately, she forgot
to turn down the button of the rice cooker. Her mom got
mad and she just said, “It was just one mistake.”
