Sampling Distribution
Discuss the types of random sampling
Distinguish between parameter and statistics
SAMPLE

POPULATION
Parameter vs. Statistics
PARAMETERS – Numerical characteristics for an
entire population

STATISTICS – Numerical characteristics for a sample

that was taken.
Practical example
Suppose you want to know the mean income of teachers in Makati
City. The mean here is a parameter of a population.

But if you draw a random sample of 100 teachers and determine

their mean income, the mean you get here is a statistic of a
sample.

If you get a mean income of 17,500 from the sample, you

conclude that the population mean income is likely to be close to
Identify the parameter and/or
statistic in the following
situation.
All SHS students in a school are surveyed
about their weights, and an average
weight of 118 pounds was determined.

Average weight of 118 pounds is

called a parameter.
The teacher wanted to know the average
internet speed of her students. She asked
100 students out of 400 students and
found an average of 24.3 megabits per
second.
The average internet speed 24.3 megabits
per second is considered statistic.
A group of social workers surveyed 5 million
Filipino families and determined that 82% of
Filipino families are financially affected by the
pandemic.
The parameter is the percentage of Filipino families
affected financially by the pandemic out of all
Filipino families. The statistic is the percentage of
82% obtained from the sample of 5 million families
The university claims that on average, it
takes at least 30 minutes to find a parking
space on the campus

The average it takes to find a parking

space on campus is considered as
parameter.
Suppose the data report shows that, for the
past 5 years, the average score of Grade 6
pupils in NAT is 64.7

The average score 64.7 is considered

parameter.
Random sampling
 It is one of the methods of choosing the
samples that will be used in the sample
survey.
 It is a procedure wherein each element of the
population is given a nonzero chance of being
selected in the sample
Types of Random Sampling
1. Simple random sampling
2. Systematic sampling
3. Stratified sampling
4. Cluster sampling
5. Multi-stage sampling
Simple random sampling
 It is the simplest form of random sampling
where each element or member of the
population has an equal chance of being
included in the sample.
 Lottery methods is the commonly used of
simple random sampling.
Systematic sampling
 Another name is interval sampling.
 A method that considers an interval in selecting a sample from a
given population.

k always round off the interval size to the nearest whole number.

N = population size
n = sample size
Stratified Sampling
 A random sampling method that divides
a population into different
homogeneous subgroups called strata.
 We use stratified random sampling
when we consider subgroups like year
level of students, gender and age.
Simple Stratified Sampling
Out of 1,000 students in a certain university, use the simple
stratified sampling method to get a sample size of 200.

Grade level Enrollees( N = 1,000) Sample size (n = 200)

Grade 7 350 50
Grade 8 250 50
Grade 9 225 50
Grade 10 175 50
Proportional Stratified Sampling
Out of 1,000 students in a certain university, use the simple
stratified sampling method to get a sample size of 200.

Grade level Enrollees( N = 1,000) Sample size (n = 200)

Grade 7 350 70
Grade 8 250 50
Grade 9 225 45
Grade 10 175 35
Cluster sampling
 Another name is area sampling.
 It requires a complete list of clusters that
represent the sampling frame.
Multi-stage sampling
 It
involves more stages in
selecting the samples from a
given population
Wrap it up!
1. Differentiate POPULATION from SAMPLE.

2. Explain PARAMETER and STATISTIC.

3. What are the samples of random sampling?

Sampling Distribution
• Construct a sampling distribution
What is a sampling distribution?
 It is a probability distribution of a statistic obtained from all
possible samples of a particular size from a population.

 It is the distribution of the statistic if we were to repeatedly

draw samples from the population.
 If we want to determine how far sample statistic are likely to vary
from each other and from the population parameter, sampling
distribution can be helpful.
Let’s practice
The figure below shows 4 balls labeled accordingly. Two
balls are chosen randomly with replacement. Construct
the sampling distribution of the sample mean of the
labels of the balls chosen.
Sampling

Let’s practice
A box contains four candy bars with varying sugar
content as shown below.
Let’s practice
Two candy bars are picked at random as sample. The
sugar content of chosen bars are checked and the mean is
solved What is the probability the mean sugar content of
the chosen bars is at least 100 g?

Sampling Distribution of Means
• Find the mean and variance of sampling
distribution of the sample means
• State and explain the Central limit theorem
The number of sample size n that can be drawn from a

population of size N is given by N Cn.

A sampling distribution of sample means is a frequency
distribution using the means computed from all possible
random samples of a specific size taken from a population.
Steps in Solving the Mean, Variance and Standard Deviation of a Sampling
Distribution of Sample Mean

Variance 2.00 0.75 2.00 0.33

Deviation
 A finite
population is one that consists of a finite or
fixed number of elements, measurements, or
observation; while an infinite population contains,
hypothetically at least infinitely elements.
 The standard deviation of the sampling distribution
() is also known as the standard error of the mean.
It measures the degree of accuracy of the sample
mean as an estimate of the population mean.
 A good estimate of the mean is obtained if the
standard error of the mean () is small or close to
zero, while a poor estimate, if the standard error
of the mean () is large.
Thus, if we want to get a good estimate of the
population mean, we have to make n sufficiently
large. This fact is stated as a theorem, which is
known as THE CENTRAL LIMIT THEOREM.
