Earth’s

Atmosphere
Science 7: Quarter 4, Week 3
Atmosphere
The blanket or envelop of
gases/air surrounding the
Earth.
78% Nitrogen (N)

21% Oxygen (O)

1% Trace elements (e.g.

CO2, inert gases,
methane, hydrogen,
ozone
Exosphere

Thermosphere

Mesosphere
Layers of Atmosphere
Stratosphere

Troposphere
Troposphere
• Starts at the Earth’s surface and
extends 8 km to 14.5 km high.
• Makes up approximately 75% of the
total mass of the atmosphere and
containes 99% of the atmosphere’s
water.
• “Tropos” means change.
• Temperature in this region decreases
as altitude increases.
Stratosphere
• “Strat” means layer.
• The stratosphere is the layer of air
that starts just above the troposphere
and extends to about 50 km.
• In this layer, temperature increases
as the altitude increases.
• Ozone layer is found in this layer.
Mesosphere
• The layer between 50 km and 80 km
above the Earth’s surface.
• “Meso” means middle
• Temperature decreases as altitude
increases
Thermosphere
• “Thermo” means heat.
• 80 km and 110 km above the Earth
• Comparatively closer to the sun and
absorbs large amount of solar
energy.
• Ionosphere is found in this layer.
Ionosphere

• An ion-rich region
• Is made of gas particles charged by
solar energy
• Where auroras occur
Exosphere
• It is more than 700 km, maybe up to
10 000 km from the surface of Earth
with no clear boundary.
• “Exo” means outside
Greenhouse
Effect
GREENHOUSE

A structure with walls and

roofs made chiefly of a
transparent material such as
plastic or glass.
GREENHOUSE

Greenhouses allow sunlight

to enter but prevent heat
from escaping.
78% Nitrogen (N)

21% Oxygen (O)

1% Trace elements (e.g.

CO2, inert gases,
methane, water vapor
hydrogen, ozone
GREENHOUSE EFFECT

Process where greenhouse gas

traps heat in the atmosphere.
ENHANCED GREENHOUSE EFFECT

Can lead to global warming.

Global warming: the rise in the

average temperature of Earth’s
air and ocean.
WHAT ARE THE
EFFCTS OF
GREENHOUSE GASES?
YES OR NO?
1. Is the Earth warmed by the Sun’s heat?
2. Is carbon dioxide a greenhouse gas?
3. Do greenhouse gases trap the Sun’s heat?
4. Are carbon dioxide, methane, water vapour and ozone natural greenhouse gases?
5. Are cholorofluorocarbons (CFCs) a group of man-made greenhouse gases?
6. Is the Earth cooled by greenhouse effect?
7. Is the temperature in the Philippines going to be cooler with global warming?
8. Has the amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere decreased since the
Industrial Revolution?
9. Is saving energy a good way to help reduce the effects of global warming?
10. Is the sea level going to rise as a result of global warming?
11. Can planting trees help reduce the carbon dioxide level in the atmosphere?
12. Does greenhouse effect keep the Earth warm?
13. Is global warming the result of a reduced carbon dioxide level?
14. Are burning and cutting down of trees release carbon dioxide?
15. Can we help in slowing down the effects of global warming?
BREEZES,
MONSOONS, ITCZ
Atmospheric Phenomena
AIR
WIND
Moving air
Which warms faster?

LAND WATER
Which warms faster?
Which cools faster?

LAND WATER
Which cools faster?
SPECIFIC HEAT CAPACITY
The amount of heat needed to raise the temperature of 1 gram of a
substance by 1 degree Celsius.

Warms and cools easily Warms and cools slowly

LOW SPECIFIC HEAT CAPACITY HIGH SPECIFIC HEAT CAPACITY
BREEZES

WINDS THAT ARE

EVINDENT NEAR
BODIES OF WATER
2 TYPES OF BREEZE

SEA BREEZE LAND BREEZE

SEA BREEZE
LAND BREEZE
MONSOONS

WINDS THAT INVOLVE

BIGGER MASSES OF
AIR THAT MOVES
HORIZONTALLY.
2 TYPES OF MONSOON

NORTHEAST MONSOON SOUTHWEST MONSOON

NORTHEAST MONSOON

• dry and cool wind

• slight to moderate
rainfall
SOUTHWEST MONSOON

• warm and moist air

• moderate to heavy
rainfall
INTERTROPICAL
CONVERGENCE ZONE

TRADE WINDS FROM

THE NORTHERN
HEMISPHERE AND
SOUTHERN
HEMISPHERE MEET AT,
OR NEAR, THE
EQUATOR
1. It is a blanket of gases/air surrounding
the Earth.

a.Atmosphere
b.Ozone layer
2. This is the first layer of the atmosphere
and this is where we live.

3. This is the layer where you can find
another layer called the ozone layer.
