Edgar Degas

Born on July 19, 1834

Died on September 17, 1917

Edgar Degas was a French impressionist artist famous

for his pastel drawings and paintings. Degas also
produced bronze sculpture, prints, and drawings.
Degas is especially identified with the subject of
dance; more than half of his works depict dancers.
Facts
• Degas began to paint early in life. By the time he graduated from lycée with
a baccalaureate in literature in 1853, at the age of 18 he had turned a room
in his home into an artist’s studio, upon graduating, he registered as a
copyist in the louvre museum, but his father expected him to go to law
school.
• When he started to build a sculpture, he often painted them backstage,
getting ready for a performance. This little bronze sculpture of a dancer is a
copy of a wax figure degas made in 1880. at this time degas was starting to
go blind, and he found it harder to paint. So he began making sculptures.
• As a young man he was greatly impressed by the disciplined style of
neoclassical artist Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres, who reportedly advised
him to “Draw lines, young man, draw lines.”
• Degas work and awkward personality set him apart from the other painters.
He also disliked the word “impressionist preferring to call himself a
“realist” or “independent”.
• He tried to capture fleeting moments in time but disliked outdoor or plein
air painting, he also admired the solid traditions of the old masters but his
own paintings featured scenes of modern life; theatres and cafes.
• Around 1910 his poor eyesight forced him to quit working. Having lived
the life of a solitary bachelor, he spent the last years of his life alone,
wandering the street of Paris, until he died in 1917 at the age of 83.
Technique
Degas experimented with an array of techniques, breaking up surface
textures with hatching, contrasting dry pastel with wet, and using gouache
and watercolors to soften the contours of his figures.

Medium
Degas had a lively, scientific interest in a wide range of media, including engraving,
monotype, and photography. Before 1880, he generally used oils for his completed works
which were based on preliminary studies and sketches made in pencils or pastels. But
after 1875, he began using pastels more frequently, even in finished works.
