Micro-organisms: Friends Or Foes?

By: Akshara.SN
What are Microorganisms?
Microorganisms, or microbes, are tiny living organisms that are
invisible to the naked eye.

They include bacteria, viruses, fungi, protozoa, and algae.

Microbes are found everywhere – in the air, soil, water, and even inside
our bodies.
Microorganisms as Friends:
Microbes play crucial roles in various ecological processes, making
them indispensable to life on Earth.

They are vital for nutrient recycling, breaking down organic matter, and
maintaining soil fertility.

Many microorganisms are used in biotechnology for the production of

food, medicines, and biofuels.
Beneficial Microbes:
Some microorganisms are beneficial to human health.

Probiotic bacteria, such as Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium, promote

gut health and aid digestion.

Certain fungi, like Penicillium, are used to produce antibiotics that

combat bacterial infections.
Microorganisms as Foes
Despite their many benefits, some microorganisms can pose significant
threats to human health, agriculture, and the environment.

Pathogenic bacteria, viruses, and fungi cause infectious diseases in

humans, animals, and plants.

Food spoilage microbes can lead to foodborne illnesses and economic

losses in the food industry.
Disease-causing Microorganisms
Pathogens like Escherichia coli, Salmonella, and Staphylococcus aureus
are responsible for a wide range of infectious diseases.

Viruses such as influenza, HIV, and COVID-19 have caused pandemics

with devastating consequences.

Fungal infections, like candidiasis and aspergillosis, can be life-

threatening, especially in immunocompromised individuals.
