INTRODUCTION
• THE MURRAYA KOENIGI OR CURRY
TREE IS A TROPICAL TREE IN THE
FAMILY RUTACEAE. IT IS ALSO
KNOWN AS SWEET NEEM.
• USES - THE GREEN LEAVES OF M.
KOENIGIIARE USED FOR TREATING
PILES, INFLAMMATION, ITCJING,
BRUISES AND EDEMA.
• THE ODOROUS VOLATILE
PRINCIPLES OF PLANT AND
ANIMAL SOURCES ARE KNOWN
AS VOLATILE OILS. THEY ARE
DERIVED FROM TERPENES AND
THEIR COMPOUNDS
• VOLATILE OILS ARE EXTRACTED
BY STEAM DISTILLATION,
SOLVENT EXTRACTION
ORMECHANICAL MEANS SUCH
AS ECUELLE AND ENFLEURAGE
TECHNIQUES.
PLAN OF WORK
1.AUTHENTIFICATION AND COLLECTION OF
PLANT MATERIALS.

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION
After authentification of the plant, Murraya koenigi, leaves are collected in bulk and
the volatile oil was extracted from the collected leaves by hydro
distillation method with a yield of 0.13% v/w, The physical characters of the
extracted oil were observed. The oil was clear light yellow with aromatic odour
characteristic of volatile oils. The oil was freshly soluble in methanol and chloroform.
The oil was found to be optically active (+04.8/30c). The refractive index, specific
gravity and weight per ml were found to be 1.4816/30c, 0.8539/30c, 0.860gm/ml
respectively. All these observed parameters are in accordance with the standard
values of volatile oil. The extracted. oil was subjected to TLC study with the mobile
phase using the solvent system ethyl acetate and benzene in the ratio of 7: 93. Five
spots were observed with Rf values of 0.17, 0.30, 0.59, 0.78, 0.96 respectively.
CONCLUSION
1)The volatile oil was extracted from the leaves of Murraya koenigi with
low yield. The physical characters, which were observed for the extracted oil was
in accordance with the standard values of volatile oil. Our TLC study clearly
indicates the presence of five active constituents with the solvent system ethyl
acetate and benzene in the ratio of 7 : 93.
2)The volatile oils of Murraya koenigi exhibits a good degree of antibacterial and
antifungal activity against all the test bacterial and fungal species.
3)From this investigation we may conclude that the volatile oil of the leaves of
Murraya koenigi is endowed with potential antimicrobial activities in addition to
it's other popular uses. It will be worth while to carry out further investigation on
this potential plant for scientific validation and screening of active
phytoconstituents for intensive studies.
