CASE 3

CASE 3
• A carton factory in Texas receives 23,000 kilograms of Kraft papers from a paper mill in the Philippines. A sample taken at the
paper mill shows that the kraft paper contains 3% moisture. However, the sample at the carton factory shows 6.9% moisture

Given:
Mass flow rate of paper upon arrival, m1 = 23,000 kgs
Mass fraction of paper upon arrival, x1 = 3% or 0.03
Mass fraction of paper in storage, x2 = 6.9% or 0.069
Let m2 be the mass flow rate of paper in storage
Solution:
a. Draw a mass flow diagram

b. Compute the original weight of the paper when shipped.

m1(1-x1) = m2(1-x2)
m1(1-0.03) = 23000(1-.069)
m1 = 22,075.26

c. Compute the amount of water absorbed by the paper during shipment

Total moisture = 23,000(0.069) – 22075.26(0.03) = 924.742 kgs
2. An evaporator is fed continuously with 25 short tons per hour of a solution consisting of 10% sodium hydroxide (NaOH), 10%
sodium chloride (NaCl), and 80% water (H2O). During the evaporation process water is boiled off and the salt precipitates as crystals,
which are settled and removed from the remaining liquor. The concentrated liquor leaving the evaporator contains 50% NaOH, 2%
NaCl, and 48% H2O. (30 pts)

Given:
Mass flow rate of feeder, m1 = 25 tons
Mass fraction of NaOH in the feeder, x11 = 10% or 0.1
Mass fraction of NaCl in the feeder, x12 = 10% or 0.1
Mass fraction of H2O in the feeder, x13 = 80% or 0.8
Let m2 be the mass flow rate of concentrated liquor
Mass fraction of NaOH in the m2, x21 = 50% or 0.5
Mass fraction of NaCl in the m2, x22 = 2% or 0.02
Mass fraction of H2O in the m2, x23 = 48% or 0.48
Let m3 be the mass flow rate of salt crystals
Let m4 be the mass flow rate of water vapor
Solution:
a. Calculate the amount of water evaporated per hour in pounds
First, compute for m2 to serve as the basis
m1(x11)=m2(x21)
25(0.1)=m2(0.5)
m2= 5 tons/hour

Thus, mass flow rate of H2O in m2 is

m2 of H2O = m2(x23) = 5(.48) = 2.4 tons/hr
m1 of H2O = m1(x13) = 25(.8) = 20 tons/hr
Material balancing,
m1=m2+m3
20 = 2.4+m3
m3=17.6 tons of water vapor per hour or 35,200 lbs
b. Calculate the amount of salt precipitated per hour in pounds.
m1=m2+m3
25(0.1)=5(.02)+m3
m3=2.4 tons/hour or 4800 lbs

c. Calculate the amount of concentrated liquor produced per hour in pounds.

m1=m2+m3+m4
25=m2+2.4+17.6
m2=5 tons/hour or 10,000 lbs
3. A factory in Taiwan produces THINGS using the most modern technology. Following is the process flow chart, with the estimated
losses at each stage: The ratio of materials from Machine C to Processed Raw Materials (PRC) is 0.27T PRC/Ton of material from
Machine C. If 100 tons of THINGS are produced per day, compute the following: (40 pts)

a. Quantity of raw material PRC required per day

100/1.27 = 78.74 (Output back to Machine D considering PRC)

100 – 78.74 = 21.26 (PRC)
78.74 / [(0.8) * (0.5+0.5+0.95) * (0.9)] = 112.1654701

RM = 112.1655
PRC = 78.79428(.27) = 21.26

Checking:
RM = 112.1654701
112.1654701 (1-.10) = 100.94892309
100.94892309 (.50) = 50.4745 Machine B and 50.4745 Machine C
50.4745 (1-.05) = 47.951
47.951+ 50.508 = 98.45874 (Machine B + Machine C)
98.45874 (.8) = 78.76699
78.76699 (1.27) = 100.034

b. Cost of materials per unit produced if raw materials cost Php100/T and PRC = Php250/T
112.1654701(100)+21.26(250) = P16,531.50
