ENG 162: SAS 4-5

Contemporary Literature: Poetry

SAS 4: Poetry
POEM: is a collection of spoken or written words that
expresses ideas or emotions in a powerfully vivid and
imaginative style. Normally, it uses some kind of rhyme, and
metrical pattern.

It may be used to tell stories, record memories, express

desire, and even share information.
Types of Poems
Free Verse: lines are unrhymed, and there are no
consistent metrical patterns.
Rhymed Poem: They give poems a musical feeling,
whether they appear at the end or in the middle of a
line.
Epic: a long narrative poem that tells the story of
heroic deeds, normally accomplished by more-than-
human characters.
Ex: Paradise Lost by John Milton
Types of Poems
End rhyme: They occur when the last word of two or more lines
rhyme.
“The woods are lovely, dark and deep,
But I have promises to keep”
Internal Rhyme: It refers to words that rhyme in the middle of the
same line or across multiple lines
“The fat cat in the hat ran out the door.”
Imperfect Rhyme: It refers to two words that rhyme in part, but not
perfectly.
“love and move” “bridge and fudge”
Types of Poems
Haiku: a popular three-line Japanese poem that follows a syllable
pattern of 5-7-5. It is often about nature.
Elegy: a poem or song that is written in dedication to someone
who has died. There is usually an emphasis placed on what the
world is going to be like now that they are gone.
Soliloquy: a dramatic literary device that is used when a character
gives a speech that reveals something about their thought process.
Parts of a Poem
Meter: Meter is the rhythmic structure within a poem and is
dictated by the number of syllables and the pattern in which these
syllables are emphasized.
Rhyme: Rhyme is created when the last one or more syllables
within separate words match. A poem is considered to rhyme
when the last words of the lines within the verse share this
relationship.
Verse: The verse of the poem is a way to describe the relationship
between rhyme and meter in a poem.
Parts of a Poem
Scheme: A scheme refers to the rhyming pattern within a verse of
poetry. The scheme could contain words that rhyme at each of
every line throughout the stanza, or alternating lines, or in couplets.
We often signify the rhyme scheme using an arrangement of letters.
Stanza: A stanza is a group of lines within the verse of a poem.
They often follow a similar pattern or meter or contain a similar
idea, but not always. They are separated from other stanzas within
the poem through the use of a break or a blank line.
SAS 5: Spoken Poetry

It mainly involves a poetic text meant for reading out loud

and a performer. As an art form, it has a history that dates
back as early as the classical era.
The genre developed in the United States in the early 20th-
century. According to scholars, the poetry of the Harlem
Renaissance, Beat Generation, and Last Poets played an
important role in the development of the spoken word in
the US.
