FARADIC FOOT BATH

DR. SYED ZUBAIR

DEFINITION
Application of faradic current to the body parts in a tub,
tray or tank containing water is termed as bath method
of application.
INTRODUCTION
Electrical Stimulation by Faradic Current
may be applied in baths. Can be used to
stimulate,
1.Lumbricals
2.Plantar interossei
3.Abductor hallucis
1.Lumbricals
Lumbrical muscles
flex and adduct the lateral four
toes at the
metatarsophalangeal joints and
extend them at the
interphalangeal joints. These
actions contribute to
the biomechanical balance of
the foot during walking.
2. Plantar Interossei
The plantar interossei are innervated by the lateral plantar
nerve. They function as adductors of the third, fourth and
fifth toes and are responsible for the flexion at the
metatarsophalangeal joints and extension at the
interphalangeal joints of the lateral three digits. These
actions are crucial when the push-off phase of running or
walking begins, because they keep the third to fifth toes
in place and stop them from spreading apart once the
body weight is absorbed into the forefoot.
3. Abductor Hallucis
Abductor Hallucis flexes
and abducts the large toe
at the metatarsophalangeal
joint.
TYPES OF FFB
Depending upon the placement of electrodes bath
can be
1. BIPOLAR: Both electrodes are kept in the water
2. UNIPOLAR: one electrode kept in the water
while the other electrode kept at any convenient
part of the body.
ADVANTAGES
1. Skin resistance is lowered considerably by
prolonged soaking in water.
2. Water makes the perfect contact with the tissues.
3. Wash of electrolytes formed under the tissue.
4. No lint pad or coupling media required.
DIS-ADVANTAGES
1.Current is not localized.
2.Superficial muscles contract more than deep
muscles due to the presence of water.
3.Chances of electric shock is higher.
PARAMETERS
1. A Rectangular Metal or Carbon Rubber Electrodes of 3x7
cm can be used.
2. A Surge Faradic current is used for this.
3. The Surge Duration: 1 sec.
4. The Surge Interval: 3 sec.
5. Intensity: enough to produce a visible contraction of
muscles.
6. Treatment time: 15-20 minutes.
METHOD OF APPLICATION
1. Position the patient in high sitting with back well
supported.
2. Position the feet on a stool covered with a plastic
sheet.
3. Place the foot in a bath containing enough warm water
to cover the toes.
4. Encourage the patient to contract the muscle
voluntarily with the current
PLACEMENT OF ELECTRODES
TO STIMULATE LUMBRICALS
1. Place two electrodes transversely,
2. One under the heel and other
3. Under the metatarsal heads
PLACEMENT OF ELECTRODES
TO STIMULATE PLANTAR INTEROSSEI
1. Place one electrode on each side of the foot at the metatarsal shaft.
PLACEMENT OF ELECTRODES
TO STIMULATE ABDUCTAR HALUCIS
Place one electrode under the heel and stimulate the muscles through the
motor point using a pen electrode.
