Lesson 1: Social Group


At the end of the lesson the learners
should be able to:
Identify groups within the society and
their functions
Differentiate the categories of social
groups
Identify and value the impacts of groups
to an individual as a social person
Activity 1: SOCIAL GROUP
Directions: Identify the group that you are a part of and
assign this on the drawing below according to closeness. Then
answer the guide questions.
Guide Questions:
1. What group/s is/are closest to
you?
2. What group/s is/are farthest
from you?
3. What are the factors that you
consider when identifying a
group’s proximity to you?
What are social groups and
how do they organize social
life?
GROUPS: THE HEART OF
INTERACTION
SOCIAL AGGREGATE – People
temporarily in the same place at the same
time.
Example: students in canteen, people at
concert, contestants in a talent competition
GROUPS: THE HEART OF
INTERACTION
SOCIAL CATEGORIES – People who share
social characteristics but do not necessarily
interact or identify with one another.
Examples: women, fathers, students, artists
GROUPS: THE HEART OF

GROUPS – can be described as a collection
of individuals who have regular contact and
frequent interaction, mutual influence and
common feeling of belongingness, and who
work together to achieve a common set of
goals.
SOCIAL GROUP
• Can
be defined as a collection of people
who regularly interact with one another
on the basis of shared expectations
concerning behavior and who share a
sense of common identity.
Characteristics of Social Group
1. Mutual Awareness – must be
mutually related to one another
2. One or more interests – groups are
mostly formed for the fulfillment of
interests

3. Sense of Unity– each social group
requires a sense of unity and a
feeling of sympathy in achieving
sense of belongingness

4. We- feeling – tendency on the part of
the members to identify themselves
in the group.
5. Similarity of behavior – fulfillment
of common interests

6. Group norms – each and every group
has its own norms and ideals that
each member are supposed to follow
Types of Groups
a. Primary Group
This is typically a small group
whose members share close, personal,
and enduring relationships.
Examples: families, childhood friends
Types of Groups
b. Secondary Group
It can be small or large and they are
mostly impersonal and usually short-
term.
Examples: committee organized to plan
a holiday party at work.
Types of Groups
c. Reference Group
This is a group to which we
compare ourselves. They serve as model
of standards and also called as “identity
association group”.

Classifications:
i. In-group – social groups to which
an individual feels he or she belongs. One
feels loyalty and respect for these groups.
Example: Fraternity

ii. Out-group – social groups that
individual does not identify with. One
feels antagonism and contempt for these
groups.
Networks
These are defined as sets of informal and
formal social ties that link people to
each other.
Groupthink
It is the psychological influence exerted
over us by our respective groups on
moral, legal, scientific and religious
matters.
Example: Holocaust, the Guyana mass
suicides, ISIS terrorism
