The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that:

154 million people suffer from depression

21 million people suffer from schizophrenia

877,000 die by suicide yearly

In the Philippines:

According to a joint study in 2014 by UP Manila NIH–


Institute of Clinical Epidemiology, DOH, Foundation for
Advancement of Clinical Epidemiology and the PPA, which
analyzed data from 2,562 patients with mental illness,
schizophrenia is the top brain disorder affecting mentally ill

There are 700 psychiatrists and 1000 psychiatric nurses

2004 WHO study: Up to 60% of people attending primary care


clinic daily are estimated to have one or more MNS disorders

2000 population census: Mental illness and mental retardation


rank 3rd and 4th respectively among types of disabilities in the
country

PGH 2014 data: Epilepsy accounts for 33.44% of adult and


66.20% of pediatric neurological outpatient visits yearly

2015 DDB Nationwide Survey: Drug use prevalence


among Filipinos aged 10 to 69 years is at 2.3% or an
estimated 1.8 million users

2011 WHO Global School-Based Health Survey: 16% of


students between 13-15 years have seriously considered
attempting suicide, 13% have actually attempted suicide
one or more times during the past year

Redaniel, Dalida, and Gunnell (2011): incidence of


suicide in males increased from 0.23 to 3.59 per 100,000
between 1984 and 2005, suicide in females rose from 0.12
to 1.09 per 100,000

DOH (2003): Intentional self-harm is the 9th leading cause


of death among the 20-24 years old

Mental health and well-being is a concern of all. Addressing


concerns related to MNS contributes to the attainment of
the SDGs. Through a comprehensive mental health
program that includes a wide range of promotive,
preventive, treatment and rehabilitative services; that is for
all individuals across the life course especially those at risk
of and suffering from MNS disorders; integrated in various
treatment settings from community to facility that is

Key Ratios in Mental Health Service
 Ratio of Registered Psychologists to the Philippine Population of
about 107 million (1 : 90,338.36)

 The Philippines has only one psychiatrist for every 250,000 mentally
ill patients, far from the ideal ratio of one to 50,000 patients.

 The rate of mental health hospitals in the country is at 0.002, while


the rate of beds in the hospitals is at 4.486 per 100,000 population. In
addition, the rate of persons treated in mental health outpatient
facilities and mental health day treatment facilities is only at 12.25
and 4.35, respectively, per 100,000 population.
