Crystals
When clay is heated, chemical reactions occur and new compounds such as porcelain
are made.
During cooling, crystals form and bind together in the ceramic.

Slower cooling produces

larger crystals because
atoms have more time to
form a lattice structure.

Lattice structure
Large number of atoms in a fixed, regular pattern, joined by strong bonds. This makes them stiff
with very high melting points.
