INTRODUCTION
The MV Rena was a Greek-
owned container ship that was
chartered by the Mediterranean
Shipping Company. It was built
in 1990 and registered in Liberia.
The ship was involved in
transporting cargo between ports
across the globe.

CONT.
The ship struck the reef at full
speed, leading to severe
damage to its hull and the
eventual breakup of the ship.
This resulted in the release of
about 350 metric tons of
heavy fuel oil into the sea,
along with numerous
containers, some of which
contained hazardous materials.

The long-term environmental impact of the
Rena spill was significant, with persistent oil
residues in some areas and ongoing effects on
local wildlife populations. The disaster led to
changes in maritime safety regulations in New
Zealand, including improvements in
navigation safety, vessel monitoring, and
hazardous cargo handling.
