Abstract
Study: Impact of absent Black fathers with multiple children on adult offspring

Problem: Increasing non-traditional family structures

Question: How does this affect adult children?

Method:
 Phenomenological qualitative study
 Virtual interviews with 12-15 Black male adults

Subjects: Multiple siblings, same father, different mothers

Goal: Inform policies on paternal support, child welfare, and family counseling

Keywords: Black fathering, intergenerational patterns, lived experiences

Introduction
 Single-parent children are 23.44% more likely to experience negative outcomes vs. two-parent
homes (Daryanani et al., 2016)

 Of the nearly 11 million of the single-parent families in America, ~80% headed by single
women (Coard, 2022)

 Black men from economically disadvantaged backgrounds are 72% more likely to have children
with multiple partners (Umberson et al., 2015)

 67% of Black fathers not living with kids visit them monthly, higher than Hispanic (59%) and
White (48%) fathers (CDCP, 2020)

 Father involvement reduces boys' negative externalizing problems by about 25% (Leon et al.,
2016)

 Employment ratio between Black and White communities is 5 to 3, impacting Black men's
ability to support families (Holden, 2019)
Statement of the Problem
 Shift from traditional to less traditional family structures changing intergenerational
fatherhood patterns
 1 in 10 men have children with multiple partners; 1 in 7 by age 40 (Furr, 1998)

 40% of men with multiple children by different women have 4+ children (Lemmons &
Johnson, 2022)
 Trend more prevalent among men with lower socioeconomic status (Lemmons &
Johnson, 2022)
 Black men more likely to have children with multiple women (Guzzo & Hayford, 2020)

 Economic disadvantages and family instability contribute to this issue in Black

communities (Liu, 2020)
Purpose of the Dissertation
 To explore lived experiences of adult males with Black fathers who have multiple
children with different women
 Investigate impact of family dynamics on adult children with siblings in different
homes
 Examine complex interactions between family structure, identity formation, and
mental health
 Address gap in understanding intergenerational fatherhood behaviors in these
family structures
 Contribute to understanding long-term impacts of these family structures on
individuals and communities
