The non respiratory include:

• Filtration of inhaled air is
required to prevent entry of
toxic substances and infective
organisms.
• The particles of size >6 are
removed by turbulent
precipitation , between 1-5
settle in the smaller
bronchioles and lesser than 1
diffuse against the walls of
alveoli adhering to alveolar
fluid while those lesser than

0.5 (e.g. smoke being 0.3 )
gets suspended in alveolar air
and get expelled by

lungs are phagocytosed
by pulmonary alveolar
macrophages or
interstitial
macrophages.

chemosensors that
monitor the CO2 and
hydrogen ion
concentrations in
blood.

Overall the lungs are capable


of performing many tasks
other than respiratory
functions including from
being a left ventricular
reservoir, filtering small
emboli from blood,
performing biochemical,
olfactory, endocrine, defense
and metabolic function to
helping in speech.
