FUNCTIONS OF LUNG
NON-RESPIRATORY
INTRODUCTION
Main function of respiratory
system and lungs is in general
gas exchange.
The non respiratory include:
A. Lung defense Mechanism : its
own defense against inspired
particulate matter.
B. Functions of pulmonary
circulation: storage and
filtration of blood for systematic
2 circulation
C. Metabolic and endocrine

LUNGS
• Filtration of inhaled air is
required to prevent entry of
toxic substances and infective
organisms.
• The particles of size >6 are
removed by turbulent
precipitation , between 1-5
settle in the smaller
bronchioles and lesser than 1
diffuse against the walls of
alveoli adhering to alveolar
fluid while those lesser than

0.5 (e.g. smoke being 0.3 )
gets suspended in alveolar air
and get expelled by

IMMUNITY
FUNCTION
• Organisms entering the
lungs are phagocytosed
by pulmonary alveolar
macrophages or
interstitial
macrophages.
• The particles are either
digested by
macrophages or are
surrounded forming a
giant cell that dissolves
it.
5 • Immunoglobulin A (IgA)
is present in the mucus
FUNCTIONS OF LUNG METABOLIC
NON-RESPIRATORY
FUNCTION
• The endothelial cells
have the capacity to
metabolize various
substances being
proteins, lipids,
cytokines,
Prostaglandins(PGE2
and PGE2α).
• Conversion of
Angiotensin I to
Angiotensin II by
Angiotensin-converting
enzyme (ACE).

• Metabolism of

AND PHONATION
• Phonation is
achieved by larynx
which acts as a
vibrator and the
vibrating elements
are vocal chords.
• Phonation is
achieved by motion
of chords together
so that passage of
air between them
7
will cause vibration

BAL ANCE
• There are
chemosensors that
monitor the CO2 and
hydrogen ion
concentrations in
blood.
• Any change that
indicates accumulation
of CO2 in the arterial
blood leads to
alterations in
respiratory rate.
8 • An increase in carbon
dioxide levels leads to
a lower pH (more
