READING ACTIVITY
A GIFT FROM UNCLE
Do you have an uncle living far away? Miriam
has. His name is Max. Miriam calls him Uncle Max. He
lives in New York.
Last Christmas, Uncle Max sent Miriam a gift. It
came in a big heavy box. Father helped open the box.
Then they saw something very pretty. It was a big doll.
It had round blue eyes and a small red mouth. It had a
blue lace dress and curly black hair. Miriam called it
Curly. She loved to play with it. What Miriam liked best
was the way Curly walked. Miriam would hold one of
its hands and they walk together around the living
room. Curly made Miriam happy.

are used to express a state
of being.
‘BE’ verbs are verbs that indicate the state of being.
EXAMINE THE TABLE BELOW:

You (singular) are were

You (plural) are were
They are were
Be’ verbs am , is and are are

used to show present condition.


Examples:
1. I am fine now.
2. He is the president of the
class this school year.
3. She is our teacher.
4. It is a sunny day today.
5. They are so playful.
Be’ verbs was and were are used to

show past condition.


Examples
1. I was sick yesterday.
2. Last year, he was the class
secretary.
3. She was our teacher in Grade 1.
4. They were quiet last night.
Remember: A ‘be’ verb should
agree with the noun or pronoun in
number (singular and plural)
Use is or was if a noun or pronoun being
talked about is singular.
Examples:
1. The fruit is ripe. The fruit was ripe
2. It is ripe. It was ripe.

Use are or were if a noun or pronoun


being talked about is plural.
Examples:
1. The flowers are fresh. The flowers
were fresh.
2. They are fresh. They were fresh.
‘BE’ verbs are verbs that indicate the state of being.
‘Be’ verb “were” is used to show past
condition.
Example:
I was sick yesterday.
Last year, he was the class secretary
Note:
A ‘be’ verb should agree with the noun or
pronoun in number (singular and plural).
