Development
Social zChange

which may include changes in social

The concept
z of social change encompasses a
wide range of social changes irrespective to
their orientation.
z
Types of Social Change

• Evolutionary Social Change

• Revolutionary Social Change

Evolutionary Social Change occur in course of a long period slowly

and gradually and through evolutionary process. Such changes
are not very drastic or remarkable. They proceed gradually like
the process of conditioning and people learn to adjust with such
changes gradually.
z

Revolutionary Change
It is the opposite of evolutionary change. When the changes
in various sectors of our social system occur suddenly,
drastically and sufficiently so as to differentiate it from
gradual, slow change, it is called revolutionary social
change.

1. Shifting Population
2. Technological Innovation

Population
Population trends greatly affect social structure and social
organizations

2. Technological Innovation
Technology is the knowledge and skill applied in practical ways
to the material aspects of life. It refers to new ideas and
outlooks, new means of producing goods and services to satisfy
human needs and wants.
3. Newz Ideas and Cultural Values
New ideas and cultural values can both facilitate and constrain
social change. For example, the Protestant ethic ideals of hard
work, frugality, and self-denial have facilitated behavior patterns
that are consistent with the requirements of modern capitalism.

4. Diffusion
refers to the process by which change comes about as
culture spreads from one society to another through
direct or indirect contact between members of two
different cultures

public concerns in developing social policy
and economic initiatives.
Social development

desirable results- higher incomes, longer life
expectancy, lower infant mortality, more and better
education.

Social development is defined in the broadest social

terms as an upward directional movement of society
from lesser to greater levels of energy, efficiency,
quality, productivity, complexity, comprehension,
creativity, choice, mastery, enjoyment
and accomplishment.
z Three Stages of Social Development

Physical stage - The physical stage is characterized by the

domination of the physical element of the human personality.
During this phase, society is preoccupied with bare survival and
subsistence.
Vital stage - The vital stage of society is infused with dynamism
and change. The vital activities of society expand markedly.
Society becomes curious, innovative and adventurous. During the
vital stage emphasis shifts from interactions with the physical
environment to social interactions between people.
z
Mental stage
This stage has three essential characteristics: practical,
social, and political application of mind. The practical
application of mind generates many inventions. The
social application of mind leads to new and more
effective types of social organization. The political
application leads to changes in the political systems that
empower the populace to exercise political and human
rights in a free and democratic manner.
z
Natural vs. planned development

Natural development - is distinct from development by government

initiatives and planning. Natural development is the spontaneous
and unconscious process of development that normally occurs.
Planned development - is the result of deliberate conscious
initiatives by the government to speed development through
special programs and policies.
